Boots & hangs - replaced thermal grease - no joy

I have an a1055. It boots and hangs after a minute or so when cold. When warm, it will boot to a blue screen after the gear and hang.

I saw recommendations of replacing the thermal grease. I did that but it did not improve the problem. I really think this is a heat issue as I was able to pursued it to re-format and install the os by having it sit on a cold pack.

I have a couple of question:

1- when I got inside, I found that it used the heatsink material, like foam, instead of thermal paste. Would using thermal paste provide enough contact to dissipate the heat? Do I need to find more of the heatsink material instead?

2- any ideas what might still be wrong? I am not certain the fan is working. I think I hear it when it boots, but it seems to shut down after initial post . . . I think. It's hard to tell for certain when everything is coming on at power up.

A fan app could tell you if the fan is running.

I think the foam also acts as a shim to keep the solder joint from cracking... I wouldn't run without it.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

The fan app is a good suggestion, unfortunately I haven't been able to keep it up long enough to get one installed.

I guess I could go back to the cold pack . . .

My iBook started to hang after a using it for a while. I then put an ice pack under it and it worked. Your problem is some where between the fan and the CPU. First try out to play with th grafics see if some desktop backgrounds freeze faster than others. This might be a grafics card problem. If its not a grafics card problem then What you want to do is find this program called g4 fan control. This seems like an expensive program but if you look hard enough you will find the free version whitch is called g4 fan control 0.5. Just play around with the software and if you need the computer to run for a long time just ajust the tempeture. You should hear the fan get louder. Dont keep your fan any louder than it should be. I would download the g4 fan control and install it on a flash drive and see if that works. Im actually writting this with my iBook g4.
