Google DNS server

Sorry in advance if this isn't an appropriate question, but in order for google DNS to work, do BOTH the computer DNS settings AND router settings have to be set to google DNS, or will it still work if ONLY the computer is set to google DNS settings?

Thanks and I really like this new feature.

Chris

No they don't both have to be set. Unless you have some really funky router that I've never seen. I've been using OpenDNS on my macbook for some time now and it doesn't matter where I go, to what network or what wifi hotspot, the DNS still works.

Just to clarify though, you can do it either way. If you want all your home devices to use it, set it up on the router and set your devices to just auto-use what the router gives them. On something like a laptop that's going to be going to different networks, you may want to explicitly set it so that you can keep using it where ever you go.

Thanks BigO, I plan on using my computer in the same environments as yourself (various wifi hotspots and at home).

The bottom line is that your computer needs to know where to go to resolve DNS names.

You can set this in several ways:

1) Configure your computer to use a static DNS server all the time. This should work regardless of where you are (unless the network admin is a real BOFH)

2) Configure your DHCP server to hand out the proper DNS server as part of the network configuration. For almost everyone, this just means configuring your router with the proper DNS server. Then, every computer on your home network should use this DNS server.

For those not in the know, the definition of BOFH can be found at http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.ph...

I'm pretty sure just the router needs to be configured. That's all I did for OpenDNS a couple years ago.

As far as I understand, it depends on what you want done. Adjust the DNS settings on one computer, only that computer is affected. Adjust the settings on the router, everything is changed.
