Processor fan wouldn't power on

Recently I tried to replace my processor fan because it stopped working in my dell dimension 4600. When I replaced it I forgot how to install it, however after seeing this webpage on replacing processor fan for 4600 I quickly followed instructions. But still the processor fan would turn on. Please help.

EKMoorhead, take a voltmeter and see if you have power to the connector on the motherboard. There are different versions of this motherboard so check for other fan connectors on the board. If you can not find anything else, and do not have any power to the connector, wire the fan up to your power supply.

let me know if this is the layout of your board. Even with the number's it seems there are different versions out :-)

Fan Connector Descriptions

Connector Function

System fan (fan 1) Provides +12 V DC for a system or chassis fan. The fan voltage can be switched on or off, depending on the power management state of the computer. A tachometer feedback connection is also provided.

Processor fan (fan 2) Provides +12 V DC for a processor fan or active fan heatsink. The fan voltage can be switched on or off, depending on the power management state of the computer. Check your BIOS, make sure it is not turned off:-)

A tachometer feedback connection is also provided.

Both connectors are the same.

Pin Signal Name

1 Ground

2 +12 V

3 FAN1_TACH

To test for proper voltage connect the negative probe of your multimeter to pin 1 and the positive to pin two. It should read 12V. The locations for Pin 1 on the connectors is shown on the 2nd image.

As for your diagnostic LED, you did not tell us which one is lit up. See the attached image for the codes.

Thanks for your suggestion. But how do I check the connector when it is plug in and turned on? Where do I put the prods?

disconnect your fan temporarily. Your fan has either 2 or three "prongs" place the probes on the outside contacts. Make sure that you meter is set to V DC and at a low scale like like 30-50V. that way you can see what the voltage is.

That is correct. Make sure you do not let those touch each other while measuring the voltage.

Definitely sounds like the power supply. If you ever notice weird problems like cd-roms that intermittently work, or hard drives that spin up and down, blue screens etc... always suspect that the psu has gone bad, or partially bad. Easiest way to find out check the voltage readings at the molex connectors, or if you happen to have one handy swap in another power supply and see if the problems stop.
