frequent and worsening freezes and crashes

My much loved G4 PowerBook 1.33 is almost completely unusable. I have another 14" iBook and a new Unibody MBP but would very much like to keep my PBG4 haning around as long as possible. Here are the symptoms.

Starting last year it began to lock up on me. I'm talking about a complete freeze that necessitated a hard shutdown. The frequency of these freezes increased and now it happens within minutes of the reboot (which seems to take longer and longer) when I do get it up and running the system time has reset to 1969 and I get an error message. I'm wondering if all of this could be due to the clock battery being bad? Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I've already replaced the DC in on this machine so I'm not afraid to take it apart. I just have no idea what the problem is.

Thanks for the help

Chris.

To be on the safe side if you have not done so back up your critical data. Ralph

Thanks very much for the feedback. I'll give all suggestions a try. I've got all of the data backed up and am considering replacing the hard drive. I'll try to repair disk errors and let you all know what happens.

No PRAM battery in the PB 12"

Concerning your problem I would suspect a failing hard drive.

Thank you for confirming the lack of a PRAM battery. I see we are both thinking along the lines of a hard drive problem. Iam hoping it can be repaired but you may be right about the need to replace it. +1 Ralph

Boot with your OS disk -- go to utilities and run disk repair until it reports no trouble found. Try this and let us know if it clears your problems. Your battery may not be functioning properly causing the date problem. I would suggest a PRAM battery but I don't believe your computer has one. Ralph

If it won't stay up long enough to run the repair try target mode via firewire to your iBook.

Could be a cable ribbon

sleep issue, warn dried heat paste, or dead battery.

Known issues:

Overheating due to heat paste drying out

Trackpad ribbon under the keyboard runs over the top of the battery and through a slot in the case... typing and other use bounces the cable up and down until it either stress shorts or comes loose. Putting a folded piece of paper under it can often stop the instant sleep problem.

Some PowerBooks wouldn't stay awake if the battery was too low, some won't run without a battery in the tray. I think since your date resets this is most likely - how old is the battery, how many cycles on it?

Good Luck,

N.
