How do I defragment and optimize the hard drive?

I just installed a new hard drive a couple of weeks ago, but always seems to freeze up.

It is my understanding that if I defragment, optimize and partition the hard drive it should help, but I do not know how to do it.

Hi,

After installing the new drive, how did you get the OS back on it, clone?

Have you tried updating the firmware of the HD?

Other defrag applications: Drive Genius 3, or, TechTool Pro (a cut down version came with some revs of the OS)

Hello Larry,

First of all please note that you have probably heard about hard drive drefag in the past but today technologies does not really require defrag anymore.

Two reason for that:

  1. Today file systems (NTFS (Microsoft), EXT3/4 (Linux), HFS+ (Apple)) use complex algorithms that constantly prevent and reduce data fragmentation.
  2. It depend on the user but in almost case today, hard drive oversized (there is always a lot of free space) and this help prevent from data fragmentation.

There is an archived Apple support document about that here.

What I mean is that your issue is probably not due to data fragmentation and you should look elsewhere.

Anyway if you really want to try, I'm definitively not familiar with the Mac OS environment so probably not the good person to help in that. However I have found a gorgeous and very detailed paper about data fragmentation and defragmentation dedicated for the HFS+ file system. It is available here.

I hope this can help!

Great answer! I wish more techs would realize this. So many still believe in the myth of defragmentation, and it's just not necessary like it was in the Windows NT days.

There is a free tool that works great called Onyx. Gaetan is absolutely correct as far as your Mac does not need to be defragged. There are many files like Log files and Cache files that can be cleaned to really speed up your mac. I use Onyx to remove these files around once a month. Go to utilities and click on console. You will see many log files listed at the bottom left corner of your screen. These along with the cache files can be safely cleaned. Make sure and read all of the documentation with Onyx.

Get an SSD. You will never have to defragment and your laptop will no longer feel "broken" when you use it. Hard drives have no place as the operating system drive on any modern computer.

Well I would prefer running Stellar Drive Defrag since Prosoft is much costlier and it is a data recovery app. On the other side Stellar Mac Drive Defrag is dedicated tool to optimize & defrag hard drive.
