My Optical Drive is Failing, Do I Replace It or My Xbox?

My Xbox's optical drive is showing signs of imminent failure. Basically it has a lot of trouble reading discs, so I have to eject them and make it retry until it succeeds and the number of tries before it works increases every day. But once it does read the disk I can play that game without issue (this holds true for installed and uninstalled games).

My Xbox is almost 2 years old, and has a lot of hours on it. So my question is: should I just replace the optical drive, or would I be better off just getting a new console?

Jake Judisch, I would replace/repair it. Here are the the guides for it. If you repair it, you get to keep it. If you replace your console, what are you going to do with it. Just another piece for the dark game console graveyard :-)Couple of good videos on here Just remember to get the same drive and replace the logic board so that your xbox recognized the drive. You may want to check on here for plenty of information about flashing etc. Hope this helps, good luck.

Please try just replacing the laser, not the entire optical drive. You can

t just swap drives. The drive is locked to the motherboard. You would have to strip the drive key off the drive circuit board and install it on the new one. A lot of hassle and knowledge to do that. Anybody can replace the laser.
