Fusion Drive- What is it?

What IS the fusion drive?

Is it one drive enclosure with both a solid-state storage and a magnetic drive inside? Or, are there two different drives in the "fusion drive" mac mini that are individually interchangeable?

Are there two sata cables, or just one?

I looked up the part number for that drive, but found no specs, just a few for sale...

Update: Here's the breakdown of a Fusion drive from a Mac Mini Arstechnica. Turns out its two devices a HD and a SSD which requires two drive bays.

It's a little early on knowing exactly whats going on inside a Fusion HD.

From what has been disclosed so far its a Hybrid hard disk, a disk drive with a SSD in one device. Similar to Seagate's Momentus XT Hybrid HD. What Apple did state is some firmware in the drive that copies the OS files to the SSD. While the Seagate can also do this inherently when you first run it. You don't need to do anything for it to work so I'm not sure whats so special here other than the size of the SSD. But as I stated its too early to know for sure.

Here's a writeup from Forbes and what some people are thinking.

What would happen if you took out the fusion drive and, say, tried to use it in an enclosure? Would you see the SSD and the HDD or is the software built into the drive and not OS X?

I think your pushing it here. First we're not sure if the Fusion drive is really a single device or not. Then you loose the benefit when you go thru USB or Firewire interface.
