Does Apple know if I opened the case?

Is there a way for apple to know if I opened the case of my iPhone 3G or even a 3GS? I know there is a sticker, but other than that is there something in the OS or any other place that tells them I opened it? I don't want to get blind sided at the apple store.

Thanks in advance,

Alex

No not exactly. If you replace your screen or leave significant evidence of opening the phone they will see. When replacing the screen some people forget to remove the numbered stickers from the old ribbion cable and carefully place it on the replacement ones. This does not mean that it is 100% certain that a skilled technician will not be able to tell so use extreme caution if performing this proceedure. Be sure to look over ifixit's iPhone 3GS teardown before you do anything. Otherwise if you are opening the phone to look around be careful and have fun (do not forget to use caution). Hope that helps!

why do you ask?

If you have warranty, have apple fix it - if you are not confident you can fix it - don't open it.

If they want to , they can tell, unless you use a new case to assemble the phone - and then the serial number will be wrong.

Does that answer your question?

As long as you don't break anything severely while/during/after opening they won't care. They 'technically' say you can't, but from experience I can tell you they don't care. Not like they're gonna ship the phone back to you unrepaired.

Thank you for your help and for being so detailed in your answers. I asked just because someone told me that there is a place in the os that tells the tech it was opened. Apple did replace my screen without question. I had previously replaced my battery from one purchased at ifixit. At the time I thought I would have to send my phone to get the battery replaced so I did it myself.

Thank again for your answers

Hi. I know no one has responded to you in the past 7 - 8 years but if the AppStore doesn’t work, the date or time on your iPhone may be incorrect, update your iPhone, make sure you have a WiFi or a Cellular connection, try powering your phone off and back on, and if neither of these things work contact Apple Support. This comment may not be relevant anymore since this is an old comment from 2009 and 2016 but I’m just gonna post this anyway and hopefully it helps in some way.
