Hairline Scratch on Retina Display

Hi,

Just noticed a small hairline scratch/crack (0.5 inch long) on my screen. I have searched high and low but it looks like there are few good options to remedy this issue. Is there anything I can buy to fill the scratch or anything that can be done to prevent it from getting worse? Also, are there additional precautions that need to be taken when trying to address this issue on the retina display screen vs. other lcd displays?

Thanks,

Joe

Sounds like you had some grit on your cloth when you wiped the screen or something sharp struck the screen which scratched it.

There's not much you can do once the scratch has happened. While a fine polish can lessen the scratch on a glossy screen the retina screens aren't glossy, they have a fine matte finish so polishing the screen will create a higher shine bloom were you rub which I think will look worse.

To prevent damage use a proper screen wipe and make sure to keep it clean.

I use two the first is a 3M micro polyester to dust the screen I fold and roll it so I can drag it across the screen with very little pressure to snag the heavy dust and grit and then I use canned air to blow the loose stuff away. Then I use a second eyeglass wipe (smooth polyester cloth) and using a cleaner spray (spraying the cloth, not the screen!) wipe the screen to remove any grease marks.

Make sure your case is clean and closed tightly when you travel so road dust doesn't get inside (the gritty stuff!). I use a stiff artist paint brush to get things loose and use canned air again to blow the stuff out the vents and keyboard keys. Make sure to do this outside. HI,

My problem is the same than yours. I noticed some scratches on my rMBP, maybe caused by USB cable... I heard about this screen doesn't include glass compared non-retina MBP. If not maybe we can repair that with Displex. We should know which matter is the front of retina display?

What is you opininon? Or do you have other solution during one year?

Any polish like Displex can help a gloss panel. But in this case your Retina display is not a gloss display! What you'll end up doing is polish away the micro mate finish (creating a gloss bloom area). All you'll do is make a mess! don't do it!

What does it mean the retina panel isn't gloss? It is absolutely glossy... It isn't matte.

Apple did two things with the retina displays: first it removed one of the glass layers then Apple used a laser etched cover glass Vs the older chemical etched matt finish glass. This allowed them to adjust the depth of the matt finish. While you can just barely see it with the naked eye its' enough to remove the glare harshness Vs the older gloss screens. Look for the original WWDC intro of the 15" retina video, they talk briefly on how they removed the glare issue as many people were complaining about the gloss screens (which is why they offered two) with the intro of the retina they tried to find the middle as the older matt finish would have distorted the higher pixel benefit of the retina display.

:-( So, the solution is display replacement or to get used to it... Thanks for your detailed answer!
