You can also use Linux as well, make sure the version you are planing on using supports the your system.
 
Do keep in mind El Capitan does not have TRIM support enabled by default. You will need to enable it following this guide [https://support.4it.com.au/article/how-to-enable-trim-on-mac-osx-el-capitan/|How To Enable Trim On Mac OSX El Capitan] make sure you are running the last maintenance release as the early versions don’t offer it.
