It sounds just like a faulty hard drive that may be pretty easily replaced. I’d buy a small SSD (or borrow one if you can) to make sure it’s only a hard drive issue and try a full install. If that succeeds you may then try to access the data you have on your present drive through an external adapter or enclosure, they come quite cheap.
