I also had this problem with my iPhone 6 and MacBook Air with an original Apple cable that works fine when charging normally, so it had to be something with the computer.
-I chatted with Apple customer support and they told me to update to the newest OS-X and do an SMC reset. It’s easily done and did the trick for me. They also told me I could try an NVRAM reset, but this was not needed in my case.
