The head gasket is blown, how hard is it to replace?

My 1995 subaru outback has a blown  head gasket. Otherwise car is in reasonable condition. I don't have the quoted $2000 to get a mechanic to replace the engine. Has anyone tried it themselves? I am self taught  but willing to give it a try
