A dead phone could be caused by a dead or extremely weak battery or damage to the logic board. If you want to try something yourself, you will ne to replace the battery to see if that solves your problem. Unfortunately, the only way to really DIY troubleshoot an iPhone is to replace parts...and that costs money too. Take out your battery and measure the voltage directly at the terminals. If it is less than 3.5 volts, it will not allow the phone to boot. That could be caused by a dead battery or defective charge circuit. Hence the conundrum. Also test the Lightning cable and charging brick on another device to see if they truly work. Last question, are you using an Apple original or MFi certified charging brick? Cheap chargers can damage the charge circuit on the logic board.
