Your best bet is going to be an extremely lightweight Linux distribution. For ease of use Xubuntu or Mint are great, but may be too much for that machine. Do not try any version of Windows newer than 98, and since you ruled that one out already...looks like you're going Linux! DSL is great, but can be finicky to install if you're not experienced. You have another option, that would be running Linux from a USB drive. That way you don't have to rely on your laptops hard drive, as the thumbdrive is taking all the slack.
