+There are many others they don't tell you about even if it has been sent in for a depot repair. Those are generally the result of Class Action law suits. The problem is they generally cover only the first four years from the date off purchase. But the Apple legal team keeps it litigation for three years so there is only a one year window, then you're SOL.

Welcome to the "Wonderful World of Apple Repair".   Never send Apple a disk with non-backed up data.  They don't care and don't call you before destroying it.  always use a backup external drive.  I don't trust the cloud yet nor do I want to pay for that much external storage.  If you send a machine in for a depot repair drop in a failed hard drive, from that stack you have of failed Apple drives.  Try to install a drive that was available for that model.

Keep up to date on all Repair Extension Programs.  Search, a lot are not published.  Here's some they will tell you about:  https://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/
