Mac mini Late 2018: Mac Mini 2018 No Power

Hi all, I’ve got a dead Mac Mini. I have confirmed the power supply is not the issue, outputting 12V via 7 pins which is as expected for this model. Something is wrong on the mainboard and I think I’ve identified the faulty component. Looks like an inductor? Plastic is melted on one side of it and it’s close to the power supply connection. Can someone please help me identify the component, I’ll need to source a replacement. Pics attached. It is the component labelled R10 1945.

Mac Mini Late 2012: 2.3GHz i7/16GB enough for a print server?

Recently, my HP M401n got bit by the Apple Photos AirPrint bug where it prints blanks. HP hasn't updated the firmware on the M401 since 2021, so if there's no fix from Apple, I'm hosed with native RIP processing using AirPrint natively on the M401. Whatever, I moved to Lexmark but I'm happy with their hardware, but the M401 still works. No reason to get rid of it when I can make it work with $40 software especially when it solves the AirPrint problem... Not to mention cheap toner.

However, the Mac I picked is pretty old, but it was also on the shelf with a good config (2.3 Quad i7/16GB/240GB SSD) so I went with this for testing and potentially the final "server" I setup for a while. I'm thinking of transitioning the server setup to a M1 Mini with 16GB/1TB in the future due to how old this Mini is, and the OS maxing at Catalina.

Is there any reason to do this with a M1, or should an old 2012 Mini be plenty?

Mac Mini Model A1283: Mac mini boots but no video signal

Hello there,

I have question about a Mac Mini which I recently got from a friend.

As I turn the Mac on the boot sound chims and the fans as well as the CD Drive turns on. But whatever I try, I can’t get any video signal out of it. I tried different Cables (I even used different mini Displayport to HDMI adapters) and also tried to use my TV as a screen. None of it worked.

Any idea what I can do to still use this old piece of hardware?

Mac mini (PowerPC): Why is my Mac Mini turning off automatically?

For some reason, my Mac Mini G4 (1.42) keeps turning off automatically. I've tried to use different power supplies (85w and 110w), applying new thermal paste, booting into a 10.5 install disk, and none of that worked. It would turn on very briefly (30 seconds to a minute or so), then turn off. If it matters, the hard drive was dead inside the computer. However, I've tried turning on the computer w/o a hard drive and still got the same result. Please help and thank you for your time.

Mac Mini Late 2014: Mac Mini (late 2014) heatsink making noise in vertical position

Hi there,

Hope you are fine.

Please, check this video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VAdzQVJH6...

I want to setup my Mac Mini in vertical position. There are three options: (1) wires at the left and Apple logo turned 90 degrees to the left, (2) wires at the top and logo in standard position and (3) wires at the right and logo 90 degrees to the right.

For positions (2) and (3) everything works fine. However, when using position (1) I started to hear a metallic weird noise. My first thought was it is the fan but to my surprise it was not: removed the fan and still the noise, I figured out it is the heatsink: if I remove it, there is no noise.

The heatsink itself looks to me as a really solid and compact piece, I don't see where the noise could be coming from. I cleaned and removed everything that can be cleaned and removed, but still getting the noise.

Any thoughts or help? I can quickly share a video if needed.

Thank you very much for your help. I am going nuts.

Mac mini Late 2018: Crash/ boot loop after ram upgrade

I recently upgraded to 64GB ram on my 2018 Mac mini. After the install, everything booted up and worked great.

Could see the new ram cards displayed in the about this Mac section, so I thought everything was great.

However, I’ve been experiencing persistent system crashes and forced reboots, which usually result in a boot loop that doesn’t resolve itself. I’ve tried booting in various modes. Resetting PRAM. All the usual steps for a Mac with booting issues. There is a noticeable “whooshing” noise associated with these crashes and boot loops when the system tries to reset. In my standard workflow, the system would freeze and then reboot into an endless loop. It’s intermittently happening, and I unplug all cables and wait for the unibody to cool down. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. The only thing I haven’t done is reinstall the stock ram cards.

Could this be a symptom of the system overheating? I may look into additional cooling options, but all my research told me these ram cards were compatible with my Mac and now i’m over here scratching my head after a purchase that I thought would improve my workflow. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Mac Mini Late 2012: What's the maximum supported CPU?

So I’m now the happy owner of a mac mini with an actually physically broken CPU, and I was curious what was the maximum CPU that would work in it? Any unsupported higher performance ones? Or just the one Apple put in? Thanks!

Mac mini Late 2018: Broken Logic Board Chip

While doing a RAM swap my screwdriver slipped and broke a chip off the logic board. Does anyone know what this does? Can it be soldered back on? Is it necessary (I would assume yes, but worth asking)?

Mac Mini Late 2014: Replacing BGA LPDDR3 RAM chips

I have a late 2014 mac mini with 4GB RAM. I already replaced HDD with SSD but some apps, even World of Warcraft can cause the system to hit swap. I use it as a secondary device for macOS experiments and alike from time to time… so I’m thinking about doing a bit risky mod - replacing existing Samsung K4E8E304EE-EGCE 8 Gb x 4 with chips of higher capacity and 178FBGA package - like K4E6E304EE-EGCE which are 16Gb.

Is it technically possible or is there something that would prevent such swap from working?
