Remove any obstructions such as labels.
Wipe down your trash can to ensure there is no debris on the surface.

Cut a piece of duct tape equal to the length of the cracks and/or holes on your trash can.
You may need more than one piece of tape if the damage is significant.
Place the duct tape on the inside where the damage is present.

This step deals with material that can be harmful if inhaled and/or it makes contact with your skin. It is with utmost importance that you wear proper PPE (personal protective equipment). Disposable gloves and an N95 face mask are highly recommended.
Follow the instructions on the back of the Bondo Short Strand Fiberglass Filler label for proper measurements of the filler.
Add in a sufficient amount of Bondo Cream Hardener according to the Bondo Fiberglass Filler label.
Mix together until this mixture becomes a single color.

Use a 1/2" plastic putty knife to apply the mixture to the outside of your trash can.
If the surface of your trash can is extremely smooth, sand the area around the damage before applying the mixture to allow it to adhere better to the surface.
This mixture will begin to harden within 3 to 4 minutes, so work as fast as you can to get an even layer on the surface.
Allow the mixture to cure on your trash can for at least 30 minutes.

Once the mixture has fully cured, use a strip of 80 grit sandpaper to sand the hardened mixture.
In addition to wearing a mask, this step should be done outdoors or in a properly ventilated area to reduce the risk of inhaling the sanded debris.
