2004 Honda Accord Speed Sensor Gear Replacement

Introducción

In this guide, I will demonstrate how to remove and replace a worn gear out of the speedometer for a 2004 Honda Accord. These cars that wear out the gears of the speedometer will result in the engine spinning the gear, but not accurately turning the needle of the speedometer. After replacing the gear with one that fits right into the grooves of the speedometer system, the needle of the speedometer should show the accurate speed of the car.

Warning: This guide involves the disconnecting of a car battery. Before beginning, place your car in park, power off the ignition, and engage the parking brake.

Prop open the hood of the car with the hood prop rod.

Pull out the large air tube of the engine by hand.
Put this large tube to the side.

With the grip on the covered part of the cables, lift the battery cables off the terminal posts of the battery.
Lift the right battery cable off the terminal post of the battery, then lift the left battery cable off the terminal post.
Be careful not to touch the metal of the car battery, especially when cables are still connected.

Lift the engine tubes out of the way to see the speedometer gear sensor with the 12.0 mm flange bolt and plug attached next to each other.

Fit a 12-mm socket wrench over the 12.0 mm flange bolt of the speedometer gear sensor.
If reaching the bolt is difficult, attach a socket wrench extension to the socket wrench to make the bolt easier to reach
Turn the socket wrench in a counter-clockwise direction to loosen the bolt.
Once the flange bolt is loose enough, twist the bolt off by hand.

Put the removed 12.0 mm flange bolt to the side.
The bolt that holds the speedometer gear sensor system in place is a 12 x 35 mm flange hex bolt.

Use a pair of standard flat pliers to gently shift the speedometer gear sensor away from the bolt opening.
Remove the speedometer gear sensor from the slot.

Pinch the lock on the speed sensor plug to unlock the plug from the speedometer gear.
If disconnecting the plug by hand is difficult, gently use the standard flat pliers to apply pressure on the lock.

Once the plug is disconnected from the speedometer gear, remove the speedometer gear system from the car.

Gently pry out the metal pin on the side of the speedometer system, being careful not to bend the pin too much.
This is the pin holding the speedometer sensor gear together.
Once the pin is loose, pull the pin out of the gear and put the pin to the side.
