Supplies
- Open cell foam, self-adhesive, 1.5 mm thick: For light seals and mirror bumpers
- Isopropyl alcohol: General cleaning
- Cotton buds: General cleaning
- Double-sided tape: For reattaching rubber grips
- Molybdenum grease: Lubrication for mechanical latching points
Common Problems
The PZ-1 and PZ-1p cameras are quite reliable are rarely experience catastrophic failure, but there are a few issues that are commonly found.
The spring that deploys the pop-up flash attaches to a small plastic post, which can break and leave the flash stuck down. Creating a new hole for the spring hook and reattaching it will fix the issue.
Over time, the command dials can start working intermittently due to oxidation or accumulated grime. Removing the top cover and cleaning the appropriate contacts can restore normal functionality.
The plastic body panels are somewhat fragile and are easily cracked, especially around the battery compartment door. The eye piece cover is also known for degrading with age and will often crumble when removed.
Recommended Service
If you are already performing significant disassembly of the camera for a repair, consider doing a more complete overhaul of the camera to reduce the chance of future issues.
- Shutter block: Remove old degraded rubber bumpers and clean curtain pivots.
- Light seals: Remove and replace old foam light/dust seals.
- Clean flex connections: Check for degradation in the rubber pads and clean the contact pads with IPA or contact cleaner.
