Do you think it is possible to connect the Thunderbolt Display’s Mag-safe power line to this adapter within the display internally?

So I can use my Thunderbolt Display with my newer Type-C ported Macbooks with just one single cable just like LG’s Ultrafine Monitor using external display while charging my mac laptops?

Or is it a bad idea modifying it like that? (catch fire or something?)

Thanks.

Since the Thunderbolt 3 spec is not publicly available, we can’t know about the negotiated voltage and power capability on the type-c side of this adapter. Even if the power input meets the requirement of Thunderbolt Display, it’s quite hard to apply any hardware modification, as you can see the complexity of the circuit and density of components on board.

Thanks for your kind answer Yuxiang.

I was hoping as if I could (1)buy thunderbolt type-c cable from amazon, (2)cut both cables open(adapter’s cable & amazon’s cable), (3)grab mag-safe wires from the display and solder them into the amazon’s extra wires that must be lacking in the above adapter(assuming because it doesn’t support charging), (4)connect the amazon’s cable to my macbook, then BOOM, it magically works.

Thanks for saving my macbook and my TBD.

It might be possible through the use of thunderbolt pass through dongle but those are expensive and would require even more hardware and bulky solution. I’d recommend just using a car charger with usb pd 65w and soldering a MagSafe socket to it. Two cable solution but now the display can charge your MacBook usb c

I had previously thought (and it would now appear, incorrectly) that the Thunderbolt 2 port on my MacBook Pro (A1502) did not out put any voltage.

I assumed that this was why when you use an Apple TB2 to TB2 cable & the TB2 to TB3 adapter above, then connect the adapters TB 3 output into a NVME M.2 2280 External TB 3 SSD Enclosure it doesn't work. Others have said that the NVME enclosure wasn’t receiving any power and an enclosure with external power was needed. But this adapter seems to have about 50% of it’s circuitry dedicated to power issues…. So why don’t external NVME Enclosures work when using the TB 2/3 adapter?
