White screen after teardown

Dear community,

Today I opened my Ipod touch 4g. My power button is stuck so I thought why not have a look at it.

I didn't find anything there so I just put everything back together.

Then I pluged the cable into the computer. It showed me the empty battery because it had to charge, then suddenly the screen faded to white. Now nothing works anymore. I tried all the button combinations but nothing seem to work. I did read something about a hard reset but because my power button not working anymore this is impossible to do.

Maybe you guys have some good suggestions for me.

Thanks in advance!

Regards

This answer is the most comprehensive on what is a common problem. If any of the answers are helpful then you should vote that answer up..not this one.

PS I'd open the iPod again, clean all the connections, reassemble and make sure that all the screws are in the right place etc. Sometimes a good battery drain and then reboot works wonders.

Hi Bart,

Unfortunately, your description does not reveal what you "took a look at" in particular...

It could be that in the moment you saw the battery symbol on the screen, one of the connectors of the screen assembly was getting loose. Just open the iPod again and check it out.

You also mentioned that the volume button doesn't work any more. Has this been the case before you opened the iPod? I am not sure if the white screen is related to that issue. In any case, I would recommend to replace this cable, called power-volume flex cable.

I hope that helps.

Steffen

Bart,

It's me again.

I apologize for my previous post. It seems that it needs some clarification on my part (English is not my first language).

Like you said, the power button (sorry, not the volume button) did not work before you opened it. To take a look at the power button on an iPod 4g is a difficult undertaking. What exactly did you inspect and remove? Could it be that in the course of your inspection a cable was ripped?

In my opinion, I would open the iPod again and check it out.

Hi Steffen,

I opened my Ipod again but didn't find anything that is broken. Besides, I don't think any cable is ripped because the screen showed the empty battery the first time.

I followed this guide till step 15:

Desmontaje del iPod Touch de 4.ª generación

The power button is stuck inside the aluminium. That's why you can't press it anymore.

Thanks for your response!

You can pull up the logic board and can push back in the power button so it snaps back into place in the outer housing.

If you snap it back into place, drop the logic board back down, and you feel a click then the button is working. However, if the button is making contact to the button switch at the end of the flex cable and still doesn't work then you'll need to have the power/volume flex cable replaced.

If the flex cable is ripped, or even if there is a problem in the button switch, you need to contact a company that specializes in iPod repairs. Replacing that ribbon/flex cable requires soldering withe the right equipment and with someone that is experienced. And I mean experienced in de-soldering, and re-soldering parts. I see tons of iPods on e-bay for sale, on the cheap, and if you ask the seller if they did any soldering on the board 99% of the time the answer is yea, and I lifted the solder pad off (very bad, and VERY VERY difficult to repair when a pad is lifted).

If you shoot for it yourself though, be sure to come back to the iFixit forums ... all the gang here will help you with any questions you may have.

I had the same white screen after replacing the display of touch 4g.

I think it's the normal behaviour, you have to reset the ipod after doing that.

My powerbutton is broken and it's impossible to use it to reset the device. I took "recboot 1.3" to bringt the ipod in recovermode (execute as administrator) and restored the ipod with itunes after a few reboots of the ipod.

Sorry for my #!&&#%' english, i'm from germany.

Let the iPod rest for a night or so until the battery is completely dead (and the iPod screen black), then plug it in a computer of charger.
