Replaced battery and logic board, still randomly shuts off

Hi,

I have a new IFIXIT battery and a used logic board in my mid 2012, 15" MacBook Pro, 2.3 GHz, i7.

My initial problem was the system was not turning on at all. Replacing the battery didn't fix it so I put in a used logic board. Immediately the system powered on and I thought all was fine.

Now it will randomly shut down to re-boot or when asleep won't wake back up without first going through a sort of booting process.

I am curious if there might be something I missed when installing the board. I didn't use/think I needed any thermal paste, and didn't have any parts left over afterwards so it's all in there.

I have reset the SMC, but have not yet tried re-installing the software or re-connecting the battery. Looking for more insight before I go chasing my tail!

Thanks

Before you install a new copy of OS take note of your systems firmware release Apple Icon > About This Mac > System Report click on the left side Hardware tab to see the Hardware Overview copy off the Boot ROM Version & SMC Version info. The update your OS and compare what it is afterwards. Tell us what they were and what they are now if different and your OS releases.

Hi @danj , I've been trying for a few days to get the laptop on. Before it would normally re boot and turn back on but this time I had to manually disconnect the battery, then it turned on for a few minutes. With that being the case, I haven't been able to keep it on long enough to transfer the files I need before deleting everything and starting fresh. I have taken note of the hardware calibrations.

I'm just unsure if resetting it will help. I'm not sure if this logic board is also faulty, I bought it used. The battery in it is still new from Ifixit, could one of those two be faulty?

I'm running out of options of how to solve this. Any help is appreciated!

If your system stays running with just the MagSafe then it would likely be the battery. But if it can't stay running then it's the logic board.

Could it be an issue with the SSD by any chance?

Are you using some odd SSD configuration? If you are using the Apple, OWC or Transcend SSD's then I would say not.

I am returning the used logic board I bought since it is the end of the 30 day warranty. I will post if replacement works

I’m having a similar problem. How did you fix it? I’ve had 2 new batteries and a new logic board fitted and the problem still goes on. Apple keeps saying it’s working but when I take it home and it dies after 20 seconds.
