Plastic scratched after cleaning with acetone

Unfortunately I used acetone to clean my macbook a1342 last night and this morning the parts of the case I cleaned are now dull and worn down by the acetone. Is there anything I can do about this? How could I rebuff it to make it shiny again or at least repair the damage to an extent? Is there any kind of oil or polish I can use? I tried leaving a thin layer of toothpaste on in for half an hour and rubbing toothpaste over it but this didnt do very much.

Sorry not much you can do here as the acetone ate into the plastic case.

But, didn't you say you wanted to jazz up your system using skins? ;-} MacBook Skins

Tristan Gale, depends on how far do you want to go with it. You can always remove the upper case MacBook Unibody Model A1342 Upper Case Replacement and then use #1000 grit wet sandpaper and start sanding the case. This of course means that everything else is removed! Then go to a 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper and sand the whole surface for a couple of minutes more. Dry with a soft towel and you can then use plastic polish to buff. Or you can just skin it out or replace the complete case.

I don't think it would be worth doing that - I'd probably just break something taking it apart.

Is there no kind of polish that wouldnt require disassembly and sanding?

The depth of damage is the issue. Polish is a fine abrasive which is good for very fine scratches.

The problem you have is the acetone has damaged not just the surface but deeper! Sanding it down would be needed. Then you start getting into the mess and how far you need to go can effect the structure of the case.

Thats why I think smoothing out any bumps (light sanding) and applying a skin will look nicer as well as be less risky and messy.

Tristan Gale yuo would not want to do any buffing or sanding with it assembled. that way you would only introduce more contaminants into the inside of your computer. If you do not want to take it apart you can only use skins or try a plastic polish. Dab it on a soft clothes first then polish an inconspicuous area and see what it looks like. Make sure you go nowhere near the keyboard, air entry vents etc. with it.

I would recommend rubbing alcohol next time, maybe buy a case for it or try a headlight repair kit? It de oxidizes the plastic lenses and shines them, may shine up the computer plastic also.
