Screen randomly turns off (bad contact battery?)

Hi everyone,

A friend gave me his "old" iPhone 6 because it has some issues.

The main one is than the screen randomly turns off, but the phone is not locked, we can still use the tactile, the phone just shows a black image.

Yesterday, i disassembled my phone to check the screen connectors and i noticed two things :

  • The first one is that the screen connectors cover is missing
  • And the other is that the battery stickers were badly applied. Indeed, the battery could move a little bit inside the phone. So i change the stickers and the phone ran pretty well for about 3 hours. Then the issues came back ...

I also have a jack plug issue, none of my headphones work properly with this phone. And sometimes I have an unexpected Siri launching (but i heard it was a common issue with the iphone 6)

Thank you all for the replies, and i apologize for my bad english

In some situations, a missing screen retaining bracket can allow the connector to slightly disconnect, which would cause the symptoms you see. However, the most likely scenario is that you have a bad screen. I would look at this guide and then decide if you want to try replacing the screen.

Hi and thank you for the replie,

I tried to install a bracket over the screen connector. It just made the screen worst (it's dead actually) I ordered a new screen and I will see when it arrives (about Wednesday).

Sooo "wait and see"

I would expect it to be the screen but in an iPhone of that age I would test the battery as well. A new battery is not just because the old one wont retain charge but also can solve issues that are unexpected and if your iPhone 6 still has the original battery then a new one can only improve lifetime of a a charge as worst case for fitting it so no negatives to trying.

In regards to the headphone jack. Does the headset connect fully or does it feel like it wont go all the way in and click. if the lightning jack and main speaker and mic are working it could simply be dust build up. use a pair of ESD safe tweezers to clean out both ports and if you can get isopropyl wipes wrap ones round the end of one of the tweezer points it will help clean the dir out. If you see a lot of dirt come out and the headset jack connects properly then all it was was dirt that was causing that issue.

I think we a new battery you may even find the old screen is fine.

As for the bracket. The 6 screen cables have a decent length and as long as the housing does not have any bends or twists in it I have never known the metal bracket to do more than be a reassurance. The tracks were introduced because on the iPhone 3 and 3s the Lcd and touch connector would pop off if the phone was dropped. But the 6 was well designed in this regard and is no pressure is there due to bends or twists then the connectors are strong enough even if the phone drops. The fact that the problem was worse with a shield could mean you were using the wrong screws they may look the right size but even 0.01mm difference and it can cause issues. See the guide on fixit for precise screw sizes to use.

Hi thomas and thank you for your help,

My screen finally arrived a few days ago. I installed it and i don't have screen issue so far. I guess the old screen was guilty.

In regards to the headphone jack, i also ordered a new one, with all the wiring and it works great since then.

BUT, i have a new big issue, the battery indicator always shows 100% (sometimes 70%) and the phone shuts down without any notification ... I guess that a replacement battery will fix the problem, but i wouldlike to have your opinions about this issue.

Well batteries have a reporting function to the iPhone from the battery, it could still be connector issues or the battery. As I said last time no negatives to a new battery. If you use a Mac computer you can get a really great app to test the iphone battery. Its unfortunately only on Mac not windows but its called coconut battery. Just google and download it then connect the iPhone and follow instructions to look at the iOS device. If the battery is bad it will confirm. And a new battery will solve the issue.

If it was my iPhone I would replace the battery anyway due to the age of the device and if it turns out to be the connector then at very least you can sit and decide if you want to pay to have that repair done at a micro soldering specalist
