Touch ID failed upon new screen installation, couple questions

I replaced a cracked Iphone 6 screen with an aftermarket only to get that Touch ID failed. I’ve done all the resets, restores, etc to no avail. At one point I was able to get to the fingerprint screen but when I put my finger on the button, nothing would register on the screen. My question is, is there any way to know if it’s the home button flex cable that’s the culprit or the extension cable behind the plate other than trying a new extension cable?

It only says Touch ID failed upon initial iPhone setup, I don’t get the message on the home screen that Touch ID cant be activated. Is this indicative of anything or am I just wishing?

Did the replacement screen come with the home button extension cable metal plate pre-assembled? If yes try the old home button metal plate, if that does not work then do a backup of your phone via iTunes then restore (restore will wipe user data).

See if that restores touch ID.

I think the problem is in the extension of the home button.

Flex home

If the button was damaged, the message you said would come out. This piece does not need to be physically damaged to stop working partially. Sometimes it is the action of home and other touch ID. It is easy and economical to try it. Another option is to mount your broken screen and take it to Apple saying no one touched it.

Yeah this is probably it. The replacement screen did not come with that part.

It can get damaged when removing it from the old screen or when get damaged from drop.

Thanks for the replies. I was just hoping that the message I get on my phone gives a hint as to whether or not the home button cable is hooped or just the extension cable. Kind of like "Touch ID failed at phone setup"=extension cable issue... or "Touch ID cannot be activated on this phone on home screen"=home button cable issue"

Today I have a case with a similar problem that I have not seen so far. The cable looks perfect in the microscope, the long flex of the home is correct (also change to a new one) and I do not get any error, neither when starting nor when configuring. Button works, but does not detect fingerprint. Restored without results.

I have had a screen come with a bad flex cable extension - but that is for iphone 6s and up. The iphone 6 has the separate panel on the light box that you generally transfer to the new screen.

Is the old screen still operational at all? If so, put it back on with your home button and try it out. If your HB works, then its the replacement screen/Extension cable panel bit.

Unfortunately, damaging the HB flex cable is a very common mistake made when swapping screens and can generally be avoided using some heat, alcohol, and non-sharp tools when working with it.

If you have a microscope or magnifine glass, check out the flex cable too and see if you see any hard kinks, holes, tears or anything that makes it not look brand spankin new.

Hi, I should have added that the replacement screen did not come with the heat shield / extension cable. I had to transfer that over as well from the old phone. I will get some photos uploaded as soon as I can. Is there any videos online that shows the safest way to remove HB/cable with the least chance of damage?

This is a good way.

Although sometimes with a Jimmys, I nail it by the bottom of the connector to take it out flat. If you nail it to the bottom you can not rob the connector because it has a metal plate on the bottom that acts as a support. If I see that it is too stuck, you can use a dryer (being careful not to overheat) to loosen the adhesive.

@caper787 Here is what i do, the only thing i would add is some isopropyl alcohol on the end of the spudger. It really makes it easier to slide under that part of the ribbon.

After the alcohol dries, the sticker is sticky again

Thank you! I like that video. That method seems to be the least intrusive on the ribbon cable. I found that the home button released pretty easy but the extension cable/heat shield took some more work and heat to release. It is my hope that it's just the extension cable that was damaged.

It is the Home Button that contains a chip that is tide to atleast one of the chips on the motherbaord. When replacing the screens on iPhones always try to take the home button off the broken screen and place it on the new screen. If you don't you will lose the Touch ID. The only other way not to lose it is to get your screen replacement done at an Apple Store. They will replace it with a new home button, and have the computer programs and equipment to program the home button and preserve the Touch ID on the phone.
