2011 iMac Black Screen but it everything else is fine

Hi Everyone!

I've opened my iMac to replace a bad HD but I left my LCD slipped from my hand damaging the V-Sync cable and the Flat cable. Now, my screen is black, I can see the desktop all over the LCD with an flashlight and I can use the iMac with a external display.

Checking the connectors, the V-sync just ripped the ground connector (both sides with weld) from PBC. The flat cable connector on the logic boards is fine but the cable was damaged, and I've tried to recover it. The # 4 led is turned off.

Does the flat cable affect the screen to put everything black (back light I supose)?

Sorry for my bad english and thanks for help!

@arkcyd yes it absolutely does. You will have to replace the connector in order to fix the iMac. The soldering will require good tools and practice to resolder. If you have not done this before I'd suggest you send it off to get it repaired. The best soldering technique used to resolder this would be drag solder. Stay away from hot air rework stations on this type of repair since even covering the connector with Kapton tape, chances of melting the plastic is extremely high. The connector itself is a I-PEX CABLINE-CA connector and available at places like Mouser.com Digikey.com and even Ebay.com.

Hey @oldturkey03, thanks for the reply! I think that the Logic board connector is fine, maybe the problem is the flat cable. As you said that he also controls the LCD backlight, maybe the best thing to do is replace the cable first? What do you think?

Thanks!

@arkcyd yes you are right. Start with the easier part first and replace the cable. If nothing else it will give you a known-good starting point should further troubleshooting become necessary.

Saved my nappy ass. I though the video card was bad so I swapped screens but had the “black screen”. What I didn’t swap (until reading the answer here) was the flat cable. Once I did that, all was well. Thank you!
