SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB) upgrading but the disk is not detected

I replaced the 250 GB HDD with a new Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB SSD. I then tried to reinstall macOS High Sierra with macRecovery, but the SSD was not detected. is the SSD broken or what?

Update (12/01/2017)

Hi Dan

sorry for my stupid question but I am a beginner at computer stuff.

the macbook I want to upgrade with the SSD has installed a OS high sierra (and yes, just 2 gb ram for the moment).

I tried to download the os sierra installer but I couldn't (nothing happens). where was I wrong?

Update (12/21/2017)

here is an update,

successfully replaced hdd with ssd and thanks to apple support on the phone, reinstalled from CD snow leopard. now step by step will upgrade to el capitan and then sierra. in the meantime creating a bootable usb pen (just in case).

by the way, is ok a 8gb usb pen for creating a bootable one for el capitan?

Update (12/22/2017)

Panic!

I updated to El Capitan but now at the log in, the system does not go on and go to the log in page again.

helped by apple support I tried several options but unfortunately with the same result. Even reinstalling OS X through the internet, did not solve the problem.

good news (hope) is that I was able to create a bootable usb pen.

what if I use the bootable usb pen to reinstall el capitan? could that help? how should I do it?

thanks in advance

Update (01/02/2018)

Luckily I solved the problem. I formatted the SSD and installed El Capitan again. Now everything is fixed and works perfectly. Many thanks for the support. Stefano

Did you use DiskUtility to partition it and then format it first?

yes but the disk was not detected/visible

it seems the problem was that the ssd was defective and I gave it back amazon. So now I am not sure whether to buy another samsung 850 evo 250 gb or a crucial mx300 250 gb or even a toshiba (the one suggested on fixit). what would you suggest? are all of them compatible with the macbook late 2009?

in addition, what is the procedure after replacing the hdd with the ssd? I read somewhere that you need to create a bootable usb pen drive (with IOS?) to start the macbook, then to proceed with disk recovery, is that correct?

@stefanochi Samsung's customer support is a bit lacking. I've never had a problem with Crucial's. Prices for Crucial are lower, but so is the performance. On your setup, you likely won't notice the difference. You also may look in to Western Digital SSDs, they acquired Sandisk, and rebranded them, which were actually quite good too.

First I would strongly recommend you upgrade your systems RAM to 8 GB if you haven't already if you plan to run Sierra or High Sierra.

Presently Apple has an issue within High Sierra running SSD in SATA based systems. I would recommend you stick with Sierra for now until APFS get updated in High Sierra.

Keep in mind the OS installer will automatically upgrade your SSD to APFS you can't undo it without scratching the drive back down.

Here's how to create an OS installer: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive.

thanks Dan,

so I should go back to sierra ... I guess using time machine is the easiest way right? Is there a way to find when was the upgrade to high sierra done?

Yes, I would go back to Sierra,

But, you'll need to reformat the drive and then re-install it from the OS installer drive. Then you can recover your stuff (not the OS) from your TimeMachine backup.

Apple changed a lot under the hood in High Sierra some of which is not fully baked for older SATA based systems or people who had working RAID drive setups.

@danj do you have any links or other information about High Sierra running on machines with SATA drives?

- de

@mayer - What are you looking for? I have it running on a test system SATA SSD with the most current Beta release which is just not workable. Others online report similar issues. Some people have noted reformatting the HDD improves performance at bit (which wouldn't surprise me) SSD's are a different case.

I would not run it yet on SATA based drives. If the next maintenance release doesn't improve things I fear Apple is not going to address the failing as they will likely dismiss SATA as to old a tech.

@danj I was looking for some detailed information on what 10.13 is doing on my SATA drives as I've had a rash of failures in the last couple of months.

i will assume you were trying a new installation, what OS?

for instance in my macbook pro early 2011, high sierra didn't see my plain SATA drive.so i use Mountain Lion USB boot flash drive and under disk utility i was able to format the drive.

I then use a bootable USB with High SIerra and selected the already formatted drive and had no problems.

An SSD is not much different as a "drive" to a computer.

@carlit, you missed the OP's comment stating the SSD was defective.

Thanks for the answer Carlos

The OS is High Sierra

So I deduce I create a USB boot drive with El Capitan (former OS on the MacBook)? How do i create a USB boot drive?

i don't know if you were able to fix ur problem.

since ur computer is not working you may need to borrow one here is the link of how to create a USB:
