White/Black screen after water damage

Hi everyone!

I got a MacBook Pro 13" Unibody. Some years ago someone spilled coffee on it, and as a result it won't work. I have finally managed to do something about it, and after some rounds of alcohol and fixing we know that the battery is dead and probably the hard drive.

When I start the Mac with the original hard drive it starts, chimes the start music and after a while the white screen of death comes up, so I thought it might be enough to replace the hard drive. When I put in the brand new hard drive it starts, chimes the start music and the screen remains black.

Do anybody here know what the problem might be?

Probably corrosion under PCH.

Can I ask where the PCH is? I am kind of new to this and not very familiar with all the terms. Thank you!

Its the larger chip near the CPU heatsink. You would need a ultrasonic cleaner.

OK, thank you very much!

Try it on an external monitor, see what you get; also press the caps lock key to see if it lights up after 30 seconds of boot. Is it not showing any image on the MacBook screen (Apple logo) at all, only a black or white screen?

If it is booting fine and the MacBook screen itself is only lighting up a black/white screen, there is a good chance the issue is L9080. This component deals with the clock signals for image and basically tells the screen when to display certain data; this component commonly burns out due to liquid damage (sometimes it may look fine, but will have extremely high resistance) causing it to sit on a black screen mostly, and sometimes a white screen.

If it is booting into an OS on an external screen, you can eliminate the hard drive being the issue. Ultimately, it will be a case of removing the logic board, checking the areas affected and cleaning the damage. I may be wrong with the above, just sharing my experience with this particular issue :)

Thank you very much! I will try this. Right now nothing is coming up. Though, the keyboard is lighting up.

If the keyboard is lighting up this should be getting into the OS, so it will be an issue related to the MacBook screen
