I have exactly the same problem. The external Apple Superdrive was working fine last time i used it but now I cannot insert a disc into the drive and I am positive there is no disc in the drive currently. Anyone out there know what to do? Could the drive itself be knackered?

I went ahead and switched this to its own question as you may need special attention.

First of all do you have an external USB Superdrive attached to your MacBook Air that does not have an internal drive.

Next if you do have, have you go under the Finder from the desktop and check the box so you can see external drives on the desktop. If you have just now done that and there is a disk in the drive, drag it to the trash.

Another way to eject it is to start up hold down the trackpad and it should eject.

Ehe Terminal app is in Applications > Utilities > Terminal

I am not sure this will help but:

I have an imac using an external usb superdrive, the drive does not show up on my desktop but I can still burn to it.

I right click on the folder I want to burn and in that menu it says, burn “name of folder” to Disc, click on this and it will burn to the cd/dvd. Once it has finished the icon appears on my desktop and is readable.

As far as ejecting the disc I use the key in the upper right corner with the triangle and line under it, next to F12 and that works for me. (on my keyboard)

I have found the utilities and the terminal, bu then it says to " run: `chsh -s /bin/zsh`.”

I need guidance doing this too please.

I have no icon, nothing showing in Finder either that it is plugged-in and ready to use. :(

Same issue here. 2020 Macbook Air and a brand new Apple USB SuperDrive. External drive is not showing up anywhere.

How are you connecting the drive? I have read that you can not use a USB hub, only a direct USB C to USB A connector. Trying to help my dad with this problem now.

Same problem here with 15” 2018 MacBook Pro. Superdrive used to work fine, but now does not appear anywhere, despite having the proper settings in Finder, and plugged directly into Thunderbolt port with an Apple USBA to Thunderbolt adapter. The superdrive accepted the CD, but now I cannot play it or eject it.
