What can be done to improve this laptop

I have a PowerBook G4 15"

  • Operating sys 10.3.9
  • CPU Type Power PC G 4 ( 1.1 )
    • Number of cpu 1
    • CPU Speed 1.5 GHz
    • L2 cach (per CPU) 512
  • Memory 512 = 2 X 256 Type DDR SDRAM
  • Bus speed 167 MHz
  • Boot Rom Ver 4.8.610

I would like to use this laptop around my church so what improvements can I make to this laptop.

I know I can go to 2 gigs of memory and the updater says that my software is upto date. The battery is still good and hold a charge for a couple of days. The 10. 3 is not allowing to operate some of the churches software,

So bottom line what can I do to improve this laptop?

Consider the lifespan of this system its quite remarkable its still working! You may want to save your pennies and get a newer system (new or used).

You really shouldn't use it on the internet as there are security weaknesses that Apple won't address as the OS is just too old. As you noted many newer apps just won't run as this system uses the older PowerPC CPU Vs the newer Intel CPU's which use very different instruction sets to work. Thats also why you can't upgrade beyond OS-X 10.5.8.

I would max out the memory to 2 GB if you can getting the older RAM for this system will be hard to find. The next thing would be to upgrade the older hard drive (HDD) to a newer solid state drive (SSD). Here's one choice: OWC - 120GB Mercury Legacy Pro 2.5" 9.5mm IDE-ATA SSD. This is one of the few IDE SSD's on the market. They also offer a smaller 60 GB as well as a larger 240 GB & 480 GB units.

The ram isnt that hard to find. Just looking for it on ebay and getting it from a good seller is the best bet. I had a iBook g4 and i found a 1gb stick on ebay for like 10 bucks and it worked flawlessly.

Like cyber said, a new laptop is your best bet. But a thousand dollars for a new laptop is still alot. I have a 2010 macbook, one of the last until the new macbooks came out that worked very well and can be found used online and on the local classifieds for around the 200 dollar range. They are only 7 years old, which is still quite old, but they can run the latest software and are still very capable machines. especially with an SSD and 4gb of ram.

I agree with Dan that you may be better off saving your pennies for a newer system. That version is considered obsolete so software and OS updates may look up to date but they just aren't being updated by Apple anymore. If a new Mac purchase is too expensive you may want to check the Apple web site for their refurbished models. They are thoroughly rebuilt and tested and less expensive than new. Today I see an offer for a refurbished 12-in MacBook 1.1 GHz Dual-Core Intel from 2016 in gold or silver for $949.
