Blank screen - external monitor only through safe mode

The screen on my late 2014 MBP will not work. When I power it on the laptop boots up but only the backlight illuminates.

I have tried every possible startup button combination, resetting the smc multiple times but no joy.

I can use the laptop hooked up to an external display, but only in safe mode. I wouldn't mind using my Mac this way, but the one thing I need is the soundcard and I can't get any output in safe mode.

Is there any way I can operate the MBP normally, just making use of an external monitor, without resorting to using safe mode?
