Startup sound from optical drive keeps occurring.

Hello.

Recently I have changed my girlfriends MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 standard HDD with a SSD. After the upgrade, I booted up the device and loaded the TimeMachine backup onto the SSD.

Now every time we close down the lid (without turning it off) and wait for about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes we then open up the lid and the startup sound from the optical drive occurs (the same sound that occurs, if you completely shut down the device and turn it on again). This is really strange and annoying, is there anyone in this forum that has encountered the same issue, and has a fix for it?

Update (11/19-2017)

I have tried to do a clean install, without installing any form of TimeMachine backup onto the machine. Besides i have also tried to unplug the ribbon for the optical drive, waited for a minute or two and then plugged it back again.

I have also noticed that when the startup sound from the optical drive occours, the Sleep Indicator Light has stopped lighting as it was shut down (it was only in sleep mode)

Go into your control panels and open the Startup Disk panel. Select your SSD drive and then restart your system. Did the problem go away?

Update (09/22/2017)

At this point you'll need to redo your drive. Clearly something did not restore cleanly or was corrupted.

First create a installer USB thumb drive following this guide: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive. Boot up your system using the installer drive, then reformat your drive using Disk Utility and then run the installer. Once the installer has finished run the updates as needed. Test the system to make sure your system is working as it should.

Restore your user accounts and then your data (not apps). Test the system to make sure its still working correctly. Then go to the Apps store and re-install your apps you got from there, again test the system.

At this point I would recommend creating a fresh TimeMachine backup on a fresh drive (independent of your older backup) so you have a baseline if within the next step things go bad.

The last step here is to slowly copy back your other apps using the Migration Assistant to selectively restore from your TimeMachine backup. Test the system after each app restore.

This did not resolve the problem unfortunately.

I will try that, and return with an answer.

Thank you for the fast answer.

Sorry for the late answer.

This did not help either.

Would it cause any problems if I opened it up again to remove the optical drive completely?

Well, I'm fallible!

The newer system firmware Apple is not shipping is intact starting up the optical drives after you resume from sleep mode. Don't know why they did that. So you will hear the optical drive initialize.

Working is a noisy environment masked the sound.

Okay thanks Dan, but will it cause any problems if I were to uninstall the ODD completely and not replace it with anything else?

I’m having same problem. Two identical a1278’s except one has a matshita drive and the other a hitachi. The hitachi MacBook makes startup sound when waking from sleep after 10 minutes, the matshita does not. Both new installs of Mojave (with reformatted HD). Any advice very much appreciated!

If the Matshita drive does not make the sound I guess you'll need to get another Matshita.

This is a very late post but I’ve recently had a similar problem to this too, and i think the way to solve it is to reset the pram. you can do this by shutting down your mac then pressing cmd+opt+r+p at the same time before the start up chime occurs. This seems to have worked for me and hopefully it will work for you too :)

Thanks for the answer, I actually tried that without it working, unfortunately.

I apologise for my last post as that actually didn’t quite seem to help me either as after an hour or two, the noise came back.. My bad haha

I have however found a different solution, and was hoping you’d give it a try. From system preferences, click on energy saver, then uncheck the box which says ‘put hard disks to sleep when possible’. This should hopefully fix the startup sound from the dvd drive.

I have only tried this myself just recently so i am not sure if it’ll help, but hopefully? :D,

Thanks

Edit: 2 hours later, the sound still there.. guess this method doesn’t work either..
