Wont charge after water damage, but turns on

Hello

I bought a water damaged iPhone 5c to fix. i have taken this thing apart en dried everything. i found out that the battery was dead. so i took a replacement battery and the phone just turns on. everything works fine, except charging. if you put the charger in it wont do anything. if i take out the battery and put charger in, i will measure 0 volts on the battery plug. but if i do this on my working 5c i find 4,88 v coming out of the port to charge the battery. so my question is what chips can be broken and replaced to fix this?

You say you dried it but did you properly decontaminate it? With water damage, you have to decontaminate the logic board before doing anything else, otherwise there will be latent issues down the road.

Decontamination routine:

  • Open your phone and remove the logic board (follow this guide)
  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, 80% of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.

Once that is done, then start the troubleshooting. Measure your main voltage rails and look for shorts. You're problem is most likely related to the charging circuit (Tristar/Tigris). Once you have more info, come back and let us know and we can give you more guidance.

I took of al the metal shields covering the board but i see no corrosion or damage, still i cleaned the board properly.

i turned it on, and you can use al the funtions of the iphone, except connecting it to a computer or powerbrick.

i dit manage to make the computer recognize the iphone by making a jumper on the front of the board: [image|1196383]

but when i plug it in a charger it says it charges but the battery percentage goes down very fast, like 5% in a minute

when i remove the battery and plug in the charger i measure 0v comming out of the battery connection so there is no energy flowing in the battery...

i suspect that my u2 ic chip is broken, is this possible? or do you think it is something else?

Certainly appears to be Tristar. I am a little concerned about the current draw though...have you check the main and secondary rails for partial shorts?

por

When i turn it on the back of the phone gets increadibly hot, even without using the phone. No i didn`t check the rails. How can i check those?

por

If it's too hot to touch, then you likely have a logic board problem. This needs to be looked at by an experienced micro-solderer and is not DIY.

Oke that i understand. But i am a mecanical engineer student and have friends who study electrical engineering and at my school we have al the tools needed (i think) I also have a programm which show all the contacts and components on the board. So i would like to give it a try. Would/can you help me with this?
