Why does my iPhone 5S keep breaking the battery?

I gave my daughter my old iPhone 5S and all was well for about 3 months. She then told me that when she came back to it after charging it, it would not turn on.

I did all the usual tests (remove fluff, hard reset etc.) but all to no avail.

Eventually, I bought a new battery, opened up the iPhone (all looked good), replaced the battery, and closed up the phone. I was very pleased when the iPhone started as good as new! Proud Dad!

Then three days later, same thing happens. iPhone won't charge.

I do the same tests again - no response. So I replace the battery again. iPhone again comes to life. (I now hope it was a dodgy replacement battery.)

But no - two days later, iPhone working ... but always showing 100% power, even after 2 hours of use. Then goes dead and won't charge.

Any idea what could be wrong - I obviously can't keep replacing the battery every few days!

Thoughts on what do next?

Let me guess. It does not charge once the battery goes flat where you would usually see the low battery icon screen.

It's a bad charging IC which can only be replaced by someone that does micro soldering. You should be able to find someone that does it locally in your area. Probably a mobile phone repair shop.

It's a PITA when it shows the symptoms like this:

- iPhone charges when battery is charged and phone is turned on.

- iPhone may not charge when iPhone is turned off and plugged in.

- iPhone does not charge the battery when the battery has gone flat.

Thanks! Once I've replaced the battery, it does seem to charge properly for about three or four days. Also the replaced battery is not full when installed and does charge up. So it seems to work at first (and each time I replace the battery), which makes me wonder if there is something that drains the battery's capacity over time. If it was the IC, I would have thought that it would not charge at all.

The only usual symptom which is hard to test is when the battery goes flat, is it able to get charged via the phone, if not then charging IC would be at fault.

Charging IC doesn't always go fully bad, they sometimes are partially faulty but still need to be replaced anyway.

Usually goes bad from using copy charging cable (non MFI-certified) and especially in combination with car chargers.
