The QiCycle Folding Electric Bike is Xiaomi’s first foray into the world of e-bikes. It has a 250W high-speed motor powered by Panasonic 18650 lithium batteries. The Shimano Nexus 3-speed gear hub in combination with the torque measurement sensor gives you up to 45km bike power on a single charge. It also has a trip computer can connect to your smartphones via their special app and is–of course–foldable.

With increased interest in e-bikes generally, the cost of replacement batteries needs to be addressed. Proprietary brand battery replacement costs can run up to $1,000. There needs to be a rebuild option and iFixit would seem to be a perfect forum.

There are several telegram chats with battery mods.

I’m running with a mod that allow to travel with 2 battery at the same time and hot-swap between then without powering down the bike. I can reach +80km distance (6ah+12ah)

could you show close ups of the structure that holds the batteries together. A tear down of the parts that keep the battery together would be nice too!

I fixed mine with a drill, once I saw back light flicker I put the charger on.

  1. Plug in the charger but Not to mains
  2. Using a drill spin front wheel until back-light fixed red
  3. Plug the power in. You will see everything is back.
  4. If your charger is flickering red, disconnect and do step 1

Hi did you spin the front wheel in the reverse way? Did you need to turn on the bike power to get back-light on?

Still guys your answers don’t address the question. seanjoeakiller wants to know whether one can just open the case and put in 20 cells in order to replace the old ones. That would be much cheaper and probably would cost around 100$ instead of 300+ that the full battery pack costs.

Update (09/20/2017)

Check step 17 here. Apparently, the battery case can open with some heating and "good vibrations" but you will probably break the one-time-use clips the case has in the process. However, if your battery is dead by now, it's the best thing you can try I guess and see if the case can be closed again after being opened before buying a brand new set of batteries with case costing $300.

This is a link to a search for the battery on AliExpress, you can find many replacements, with prices starting at $219.99 (USD).

The real problem with repair or recreation of these batteries is opening the unit without damaging it. I'd love to be able to open the battery unit and test the cells to see if one is faulty and preventing further charging.

I'm a hair’s breadth from buying a replacement battery myself, as my battery won't charge anymore and Xiaomi don't support the cycle in my region. But that $219+ replacement price isn't a small amount, so I'm struggling on without the battery for the moment.

I removed the battery, opened its casing, and split the battery in two as then it was within the air transport laws (Australia). I don't recommend this unless you really know your electronics. The cells are spot welded in place and can get hot when removing. I never got it to work again..

I have photos of seperated battery internals

Definitely NOT user serviceable then?

No wonder they never used this style battery unit again.

Thanks!
