How do I reinstall firmware on my iPod 5th Generation Video classic?

I plugged my ipod 5th gen classic into a set top box to record television. Rather than delete a recording, I chose the reformat disk option. The ipod is now trying to restart continuously, the Apple logo appears and disappers immediately. The iPod is not detedcted when plugged into a Mac or PC. It was working fine until I did this, unless this action has damaged the hardware. The iPod was FAT32 formatted. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Success! This link (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363) sorted it all out for me. Holding down the menu button at the same time as the select button, waiting for the Apple logo and then holding the select and play button at the same time put the iPod into disk mode. When in disk mode, the PC then saw the iPod and I was able to restore using iTunes.

Thank you very much for your help.

Apple recommends the five Rs when you’re having troubles: reset your iPod settings, retry on a different port, restart your computer (after updating software), re-install your iTunes software, and restore your iPod (erasing all data on it). Trying each of these steps (one at a time, not all of them) will solve most problems with iPods. Here is apple's official solution. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369?viewl... as for your format Fat32 should recognize it in windows but one you restore it it will restore it differently I think its RAW or something can't remember. you just have to get it to a point of being recognized. Have you try to reset it http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363 You can also reset your ipod video from the diagnostic mode. Here is a good site it show the 4th gen but it's pretty much the same with the 5th gen. Try to reset with that. Once you have gone through these let us know what works and what does not so we can help you further, these are all the steps I can think of right now and just do one at a time..Once you have it recognized by ipod you can restore your ipod which will reformat the drive appropriately and install the firmware...good luck
