Desktop opens and then computer shuts down - New logic board?

I've replaced battery and installed new hard drive on MBP mid-2010, model A1278. Alas, still have same problem. Once desktop opens, unless I'm holding down Command key, computer shuts down. Is this a logic board problem? Seems like that's the only component left. And, if so, is there an easy fix? Also, are there any alternatives to 820-2879 (e.g., 820-2877)? The only reason I was rehabilitating this device was to give it to my niece, but now it's getting costly. Any advice appreciated.

P.S. Original problem was simply shutting down immediately after starting up -- not dissimilar from what's happening now. Didn't bother with computer for 3+ years and just used my MacAir. When I got around to opening it up, discovered that the battery was completely shot, so I assumed that was the problem. In order to give the computer as a gift, replaced the battery and replaced the hard drive. Now, it seems, I'm back where I started 3 years ago!

What happens when you insert the original system installation disk and boot holding down the "C" key? If it boots OK, run Disk Utilities (10.6.3) from the second page of the installation and let us know your results

I've never heard of just holding down the Command key by itself. Here are the keyboard options you can try:

What was it doing before you started making repairs?

Maybe it's a defective keyboard; sounds like that or water damage- or both.

Hi, Mayer. My mistake. Having retrieved and played with the computer a bit, here's more accurate info. Since the operating system was reloaded from original discs, when I start up the computer, I get the Apple set-up procedure (Welcome graphic, location, language, internet login). It appears that so long as I hold down the Option/Alt button, the computer continues running. The computer shuts down a few seconds after I release it. In proceeding with the set-up, however, I encountered a difficulty in that system was rejecting my internet login passwords for both my router and my iPhone hotspot. (Is there a way to see the the password that I'm inputting rather than just the dots?) As stated, so long as I held down the Option key, the window was still open (despite my being stuck at that stage), but once I released the key, the computer shut down.

I tried starting up holding down (1) Control and (2) Command. In each case I encountered a different problem. When I get to the point where I have to enter network password, the window won't take input (i.e., the keys aren't working). So I release the Control or Command key and the computer shuts down.

Only other information I can offer is that when I open while holding Option key, the first thing that appears is an image of the hard drive, which I have to select, and then start-up proceeds to the Apple icon. In the other two instances, the start-up goes directly to the Apple icon.

Thanks in advance for further thoughts/suggestions.
