Keyboard nothing working after water spill, but trackpad is working

Hi everyone,

About a year ago, I stupidely spilled beer on my MBP. The next morning, the keyboard wasn't working. I plugged in an external keyboard, and I have been using that ever since.

A year later, my laptop is working fine besides the keyboard. The trackpad works perfectly. The power supply is how it has always the been. The speed of my computer is the same. I guess I am lazy, but I didn't look into fixing my computer because I heard it would be around $800 to fix which I wasn't willing to pay because I could just get a new laptop.

However, is that cost to cover the damage of the trackpad and the keyboard? I'm not really a technology expert and barely understand the concept of these components anyways.

Please let me know! My mom wants to buy me a Chromebook, but I'm rather attached to my MBP since I bought it with a minimum wage salary, and it has all of my audio software on it. I'm not sure the Chromebook will be able to run any of my studio software (which would be a complete waste of money!!!)

Thanks. Any reply helps! :)

Hi, the issue you're having with your keyboard could be one of two things; the motherboard or the actual keyboard itself. If it is the keyboard, which it probably is, then a quote of $800 is ridiculously high. I need more information to help you, though. Can you provide the model number? It should be either A1278, A1425 or A1502. Also, was it Apple or a 3rd party that quoted $800 to fix?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I am not sure where to find the model number. I do not have the box as I bought this a couple of years ago.

Apple never quoted me, but the price was from previous knowledge online. I have a serial number if that is helpful??

Hey, based on the other info you commented, you have a 2012 A1278 13" MacBook Pro. Unless the issue is in the motherboard (which is very unlikely), you will need a keyboard replacement, which will cost you ~$20, but it is quite a tedious repair that will take you around 1-2 hours. You could also replace the whole upper case, but the part cost will be a lot more. Here's a guide on how to replace just the keyboard for a 2010 MacBook Pro. Some of the steps may look different, especially the steps for unplugging cables, but the principal is the same: Reemplazo de teclado de MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010. There are also some good youtube videos for your specific model that may be more helpful.

Thank you so much! However, I do not trust myself to do these repairs. Do you know anywhere in the NYC area that could do this? :) If not, thank you again. You've been super helpful.

I live in Vancouver so I'm really not familiar with NYC haha, but I would recommend Rossmann Repair Group! Louis Rossmann has a ton of repair videos on youtube if you want to check them out.
