Bad logic board or something else after a spill?

Spilled liquid on left side of keyboard.

Here's what's wrong:

  • Laptop screen has faint horizontal lines and intermittently freezes
  • Keyboard and Trackpad stop responding 50% of the time, usually after sleep

Aside from that, no other problems at all. No problems on an external display, so I assume that rules out the integrated graphics card?

Do I need to replace the logic board, or is it something else?

Remove the logic board and clean it with 95%+ isopropyl to get rid of any corrosion.

When the bottom cover is removed, check for corrosion on the top right of the board (where the screen plugs in). If there is none here, it is likely liquid has gotten between the plastic hinge cover to the screen itself.

Keyboard and trackpad issue are likely a problem with the trackpad cable. If the trackpad is not detected by the Macbook, the keyboard will not work as well. I have seen this intermittent fault before on non-liquid damaged MacBooks.

Thanks for the input. I had a feeling the problems may be caused by residue on connections leftover from the liquid. I will be pulling it apart tonight and let you know how it works out.

I cleaned up the connections and motherboard with alcohol but I still don't have a working display. The apple diagnostic is giving me a "VFD004/There may be an issue with the display" error. Do you think the damage is limited to the display, or could this still indicate a logic board problem?

This can indicate a problem with the display (if the liquid got on the hinge cover) or it can be with the screen cable or logic board. Might be worth removing the display, hinge cover, etc until you see the PCB attached to the screen. Clean liquid from this if there is any, you may have to replace the LCD connector or components on the screen PCB itself.
