MacBook Pro doesn't start after changing HDD

Hi guys,

I recently changed my HDD to another one in order to sell the MacBook.

After that it doesn't turn on anymore.

The only thing happening is that the white light turns on for a few seconds, then it goes off only to go on again. In this process the fan, the superdrive and the hdd make noises, so this isn't the problem, i think. This happens repeatedly until I shut it off completely with holding the power button.

I tried to rest the SMC, NVRAM an so on. Nothing helped. I also tried it without the HDD, with the old HDD also tried it without the RAM.

Anyone knows the Problem? May it be the Logic board? I am a student, so I don't have the money to replace it or even buyour a new Macbook.

I hope someone can help me.

Was the system working before you started?

Where you having any problems with the system before you started?

So all you did was open the system, disconnected the drive cable and just swapped the drive? Correct?

Can you give us information on the drive (make and model)

To be completely, before it all f***** up, I had MacOS 10.11 and Windows 10 on my 1 TB hard drive. It all worked fine. I then installed OS 10.11 to a 300 GB external drive and started it once (from USB). It worked fine.

Then I installed the hard drive an it looked to work. OS X was booting. But right before it was completely booted the MacBook shutted itself off.

To answer your question, I opened the system, disconnected the battery, disconnected drive cable and swapped the drive.

Also, the behaviour described in my first post seem to change from time to time. Sometimes it is like I described, sometimes it starts, shutting off after a few seconds and then it starts but no chime, black screen and the fan is constantly running.

And ... what is the make & model of the drive you put in

It's an WD3200BEKT - 75KA9T0 from Western Digital.

I think it's the drive it came with but i'm not sure cause I bought it used a couple of years ago.

You got the correct drive for your system as your system has only a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) interface, so that's not your problem here.

Lets disconnect the HD to see what happens. If the system starts up looking for a boot disk then I'm suspecting the HD SATA cable is having problems. Here is the IFIXIT guide to replace it: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Early 2011 Hard Drive Cable Replacement and the cable you want is this one: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable - Apple P/N 923-0104

If that doesn't change anything then I'm suspecting one of the RAM modules is trouble here. Carefully remove the RAM and try the system without any RAM what do you see or hear?

If the system does not respond with either test at all you have a bad logic board here. Sorry ;-{

When you opened the system up did you bang/drop something on the logic board?
Did you use proper ESD precautions?
Did you use a plastic tool to disconnect the battery?

While the your system does have a GeForce 320M graphics chip it is not replaceable as its intergraded into the logic board so if that was the problem you'll still end up needing a new logic board.
