How do I disable auto-dimming of screen based on content?

Hello,

I own an Asus Zenpad S 8.0 (Z580CA) tablet and I like it. However there is one detail that is rather annoying. Although Brightness is set to fixed, and I've disabled any power saving option I could find, the screen brightness automatically drops if the image on the screen is darker. It also goes brighter when, you guessed it, the image on the screen is in brighter colors. How the !&&* do I disable this? My head hurts because of frequent brightness changes. I've found answers on Google only for Windows. Thanks for any help!

Has there been any update on this that has been discovered by anyone? I have just bought the asus z580c tablet and am really liking it apart from the dimming of the screen! Is there any way of switching thia function off?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Found this quote, taken from this link http://www.zenpad.org/2015/10/z580ca-rev... which may be of interest to you.

"If you feel the need to tweak the display there is an Asus app “Splendid”. This app allows you to adjust the display in a number of ways including color temperature, hue, saturation, and some presets like Balance, Bluelight Filter, and Vivid. The flexibility is in the hands of the user when it comes to visuals, so if you don’t like what you see, go ahead and tweak away".

Here is a link to the app.

Also have you checked that you have the latest firmware installed? Depending on your version there are some released as late as Jan.2016 and Dec 2015.

Here is a link, select your OS -Android

Hopefully this is of some help.

Well, it seems the problem is more subtle than using brightness or the Splendid app settings. Here's something from http://www.anandtech.com/show/9555/the-a...:

Dynamic Brightness and Contrast

These features are often referred to as CABC, or Content Adaptive Backlight Control. Unfortunately, the ZenPad S goes overboard with its adaptive brightness, which was also an issue with the ZenFone 2. Because the ZenPad S has a much larger display, the shifting of brightness is far more obvious than on a phone. For example, when scrolling through the recent apps tray you will notice the brightness of the entire display going up and down depending on how light or dark the interface of the application currently in view is.

I read you can disable this, but had no success. Not even the developer options for Android don't work. Most likely I'll need root it and disable it from init.d (according to other searches). Thanks for the help! I used Splendid for color temperature / anti blue light.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. Did you check your firmware version? The latest update mentions something about making 'movies' better to watch. Maybe they adjusted the brightness control, along with other things to make it better. Just a thought.

Well, it looks like the zenpad has a lot of hardcoded stuff, bloatware etc. I googled some more, and it seems more people complained about this even about laptops: https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.ph...

http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/a...

https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/com...

and even some for Dell, where it seems they released a patch. But these people have windows and you can disable that.

I tried Brightness Adjuster & some other software to no avail. What's funny is even with automatic brightness, this fluctuation happens. Because it relies on the screen content. So even if I set a fixed brightness of 30, or the Auto one is 50, there still is a plus/minus variation for dark and bright pages. And this is more annoying the bigger the screen, like the people with laptops say. I have a technical complaint with Asus, I'll see where that goes.

Delete or rename file

\system\lib\libdm_dpst.so

and reboot. I did this and it works. I renamed it libdm_dpst!!!.so

It is Intel DPST (Display Power Saving Technology)

PS: you need root permissions to do this.

This solution did not work. The file itself does not exist. I am on rooted phone.

I have this issue on Asus ZenFone 3 ze520kl. This is a new issue after a firmware update in mid May 2017. Very annoying, I may have to replace the phone.
