Water dispenser randomly stops working.

My water dispenser acts like I has a mind of its own. It will work fine for weeks or months, then stop out of the blue. I can check it a few times a day then say a week later it will work again without any changes to the settings of the refrigerator at all. A new filter does not change this and the ice maker continues to work the whole time.

I know that low water pressure or icing of the water inlet tube can be factors, however I can not see these two things being at fault as I do not defrost the line and when the dispenser works it distributes water normally.

My guess at this point is maybe the door switch on the bottom of the freezer door has a mind of its own?

Thoughts are greatly appreciated!

I have a G.E. side by side that does the same thing and I'm searching for a solution also. Can anyone shed some light, please?

I have this problem also.. I have replaced the dispenser control panel and the dispenser lever switch, but neither resolved the problem. At times, the green selection light for water, crushed ice, ice cubes, etc. just disappears and then re-appears later. I am assuming this is an electrical problem somewhere, but I don't know what else to check.

I fixed this problem by adjusting the pressure setting on the house water supply. Replacing the filter may have triggered the issue by introducing more resistance to water flow. In my area, the water pressure from our provider varies. In the fall, sometimes I need to adjust the water pressure lower to avoid banging noise from pipes after water usage.

Cause 1

Water Tube in Door is Frozen

To determine if the water supply tube is frozen, disconnect the tube at the bottom of the door and blow air through it. If air does not pass through, this indicates that the water supply tube is frozen. If the water supply tube is frozen, thaw it out. In addition, ensure that the freezer is kept at the proper temperature. The freezer temperature should be kept from 0-10 degrees Fahrenheit. If the freezer is too cold, the water line may freeze.

Cause 2

Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve opens to supply water to the dispenser. If the water inlet valve is defective, or if the water pressure is too low, the water valve will not open. The valve requires at least 20psi to function properly. Make sure that the water pressure to the valve is at least 20 psi. If the water pressure is sufficient, use a multimeter to test the water inlet valve for continuity. If the water inlet valve does not have continuity, replace it.

Cause 3

Low Water Pressure from House Supply

The home may have insufficient water pressure. The water inlet valve supplies water to the water dispenser. The water inlet valve requires a minimum of 20 psi to function properly. Check the water flow and test the pressure to determine if it is at least 20 psi.

Thank you, Mayer. This gives me some idea of what I'm dealing with and direction on how to proceed. Much appreciated.

Frozen or partially frozen water pipes will lower the pressure.

Hmmm.... I've been doing some research and that might be it. Thank you again.

I am taking about the house plumbing here. My pipes got partially frozen during the last winter storm.

Oh... Ok, thank you for clarifying. I don't think that would be my issue. But the other info helps. Thanks again.
