How hard will it be to upgrade the non-Pro version with your own SSD?

So, what replacement parts can we get/order to replace/fix it?

And how do you open it? Please advise.

As I have stated, adding a hdd cannot be done yet. There are only solder pads on the 16gb version and no cable.

To open, gently pry the bottom off with a flathead screwdriver. Also gave a t6 and t5 head ready.

I took a look inside the shield awhile ago. It seems like the hard drive is on a special connector that is on a separate board that has the rear ports on it. It seems like the 500 gb models have the connectors soldered on the board whereas the 16gb don't have the connector at all, only pads on that board.

TL;DR: If you want to upgrade you're SOL.

!&&* even the hard drive format is special and isn't recognized by windows. Haven't tried Mac yet.

Thanks,

I've read the 16GB version doesn't have the drive connections, people haven't found a recognizable partition/layout of the drive so far and that you MAY be able to do a bit copy of the drive.

I'll plan to get a 16GB version and SD card to play with as a replacement for my current Boxee Box(Kodi) media players.

ever since Android 6 came to Android TV, I am now using a 128GB Micro SD as internal memory! awesome!!

sadly, my poor old Boxee Box with Kodi 14.2 just gathers dust in the garage now!

Just buy a USB 3.0 SATA adapter and connect an external SSD or just put in a Mico SD Card.

SO, now that the Shield can be used as a Plex multimedia server, I was wondering if I might be able to connect a Shield to an NAS to stream media. It would not be an SSD, but an HDD.

Thoughts?

Did you have to format it on pc first

- de

I used gui format 32 first,( so it would be reconized by the shield, partitioned the drive, then format it to a 32 bit format) then proceeded to format it via the shield usb port closest to the hdmi port. If by chance to get a warning that the drive appears slow. You cant still use it. I did get thelat warning,, clicked the proceed box. And its working just fine for the pass 3 months.
