Upgrade a 30gig Video(5G) with a 120gig iPod Classic harddrive

A few days ago a roommate gave me his 120gig iPod classic with a cracked LCD.

I'm using Windows 7 64bit

G4 PowerMac with 10.4.11

G4 iBook with 10.5.8

All with itunes v9.2 up to v9.2.061 in Win

I formated The 120gig Classic in itunes before I removed the hard-drive a Toshiba(MK1231GAL) with no problems. I installed the hard-drive in a 30gig iPod Video (5G) v1.3 Model #A1136

Serial #4U5495X3TXK (Model #MA146LL in the about section) With the 120gig Rubber bumpers. Fit inside just fine

And is just doesn't seem to be working. In iPod Diagnostics it shows the drive just fine.

(In Windows)I can't open itunes before i plug it in via USB. Under normal mode I keep getting iPod needs to be restored but when it try's to restore the iPod is busy. Under Disk mode its Corrupted and cannot restore and locks up itunes.

When I tried again today in Disk Mode windows see's the iPod as a removable disk that isn't accessible.

(In OSX) Normal mode I get cannot be restored because the iPod is Busy. More Information leads to Error 1405. In Disk Mode the iPod is busy. Disk Utility in I get a Input/Output error. No option for First Aid either

I tried restoring using a different Firmware File in windows and OSX. But know luck.

I know this is looking like a bad harddrive. But not 2 days before I removed it it restored just fine in the orig 120gig case.

So I was curious if the 5G video was the main problem. As in a motherboard incompatibility of some sort.

The orig 30gig is going back in the 5G tonight and maybe the 120gig too.

To all the guys involved with the Site, Guides, and Answers.

Many Thanks

You all saved me a lot of headache during G3/G4 iBook, MacBook, and iPod teardowns.

Update

Well reinstalled the 30gig in the 5G and it's working just fine. The 6th Gen 120gig is another matter. Its doing alot of the same things, itunes will see it, restore it, copy songs for a few minutes and lock up. So I'm just gonna do some more research and hopefully I can get some use out of it.

The 6th generation (Classic) and 5.5/5th gen (Video) hard drives are not cross compatible. However, there's a 240GB hard drive available for the 5.5/5th gen (60 or 80GB). You can use that if you also obtain the thicker back. If you want to stay with your 30GB slim back, you can order the 120GB version of that 240GB hard drive. This site has all the options for your generation iPod. http://www.rapidrepair.com/shop/iPod-vid...

iFixit: please start carrying this drive!

nice drives with high prices. since there are cf card adapters for the iPod video on the market - i would put a cf card in it. surely the 128gb cards are expensive . but 32gb are cheaper than a 30gb hdd

dont know if this helps though i was given a 5.5 gen with a bad hdd and at first it gave me troubles not starting i did not have a computer at the time, and didn't wanna loose my old music and found out the ribbon connecter can disconnect on the drive side to under the foam so i swaped the ribbon from the busted 80 and it worked fine, just had to stuff in a match book for floppedge when i closed it(80g case looked newer).
