Microphone issues only with Siri

I have a bit of an odd issue that I thought would be a quick fix, but has proved to leave me scratching my head.

3 months ago my iPhone 6 got some slight water damage in my pocket.

Shortly after everything seemed to be working just fine until I tried to use Siri and thats where I first noticed my problem. Let me confirm one thing, the microphone works great for phone calls, great with video, great with almost everything, yet when I try use siri, it shows the waves as if there is audio input, but no real audio is getting in.

When I attach headphones siri works great! No issues, but when I take them out, I get just waves of audio, but not actually audio coming from me.

I have only noticed this effect in one other area and that is with sending voice memos within iMessage, it is just a bunch of static noise. Normal voice memos work great.

Any thoughts on a solution

I tried replacing the lighting port assembly just now, which includes the microphone on the bottom, but alas, the same issue is still present. I am lost for ideas.

All help is appreciated. I can make a quick video if necessary.

I've had the exact same problem!! Bought the phone in end of April, by End of June, stopped working. Apple Store replaced the phone, worked fine for another month, same problem. Apple Store replaced the phone AGAIN in July, worked fine until one month later (August) Apple Store replaced the display this time. Worked fine for another month and now (Septmber) crapped out again!!! I am frustrated to say the least. I have had 3 new phones, and one new display in 5 months!! I take care of my phone to the point of being OCD about it, I use the OtterBox Defender case ALWAYS!! And I clean it constantly. Only thing I can think of is that I use it in my car for music plugging into auxiliary through the headphone jack, so maybe the headphone jack thinks there is still something plugged into it even when there isn't. Frustrating as !&&*, any insight would be welcomed!!

change power button flax siri start work

I am having same issue with my Iphone 6 16 GB brought on December 2015. Unfotunately my warranty is over and I am being suggested for a paid replacement. Truly very much disappointing

- de

Did anyone find a working solution? Even Apple Store couldn't fix mine.

- de

i think it has to do with the front facing camera part, i have the same problem on an iphone 6 plus and the only thing wrong with my phone the front camera, it could be a mic used for noise cancellation isnt recognized so siri just wont work.

Here is my solution!

I replaced the "iPhone 6 Front Facing Camera and Sensor Cable" and it now works!

This part also contains a small front facing microphone commonly used for siri or facetime. Once I did that my problem was solved! So stoked. Hopefully that helps some of you guys with siri audio issues as well. All i know is siri uses the microphone that is attached to the earpiece and facetime camera, and if that becomes moisture damaged, it will no longer work.

3 Microphones on a phone, couldn't have added a 4th one eh apple?

Ok this is SOLVED!!! Yeaaaa!! :-)

After I updated, Siri and Dictation quit working and only worked on Bluetooth!

I tried everything and spent days researching it on the web and no one knew anything!

I checked all the settings, I tested the memo mic and the main camera mic and all worked good. I was positive it was a software issue and it was... More or less.

Turns out that the selfee mic IS the problem, it's the mic on the screen side of the phone near the camera. And it's not the same one used for memo recording that's on the bottom!

Maybe my phone used more than one mic or a different mic for Siri and Dictation before the update, and then after the update used only the Selfee mic... I don't know, but I bought a camera and mic combo part and a pentalobe screwdriver to get the screws out and changed it my self.

And BINGO! no more Siri and dictation problems. WHEW!!!

- de

Neither Siri nor Dictation is working, but FaceTime does. Also of note when I press home to use Siri or the keyboard mic icon, it appears as though there is feedback coming from somewhere. Even though I'm not talking the, the sound wave is fluctuating like I'm speaking. Since FaceTime works, I don't think this could be a mic issue. Are you positive the same mic is used for both?

- de

Thank Goodness! That was my problem too. I tested the video recording and "bingo"the screen side camera recording was all static! Everything else recorded clear. I will get that mic replaced and I should be in business too. Thank you all for taking the time to document your fix.

- de

I agree with rsgibson mic is okay and today i found one more thing when i press or hold the home button in very first time the siri listing my voice but when i tap on microphone icon on siri screen then she cant hear the signals of my voice. so i am going back on main home screen then i press and hold the home button to talk to siri :(

Tried all the turn on /off, reset this, that, blah! Siri worked with headphones. Used compressed air and blasted the mic ports on front and back, ear speaker, and bottom speaker. Started working.

Same here everybody, on my 6+, Siri and voice to text stopped working. I was told to use compressed air on the front mic that is in the ear speaker. I don't use a lot of PSI pressure, but after doing this, both Siri and voice to text start working again. I would like to mention that I have had to do this 2 times in the last 2 months. As soon as I can, I will be switching to a life-proof case. I can only hope that doing that will keep the problem from coming back. Hope this helps someone. Take care.

Hey! I want to try this. What kind of compressed air did you use? Any particular brand?

I was having the same issue as everyone on here. Siri, and voice memos and voice texting in iMessage wouldn't work. They would work with my headphones or on bluetooth. I would just get static and see a flat line with no registering of my voice. I tried all the other possible solutions I could find on the web with no luck. I was thinking I would have to replace the mic in the earpiece. After using canned compressed air for electronics to blow out the earpiece speaker it is now working great!!! Thank you so much for this tip! You saved me money and it was a simple fix that worked!! :-)

- de

Thanks for sharing this - a little compressed-air clean out got Siri working again for me like a champ.

- de

I have a rocket-air blower for blowing lint off my camera lens. Worked great for this too. "Thank You" for providing a simple solution to an ugly problem! I suspect a drop of liquid entered the microphone hole the last time I used a cleaner on my phone.

The problem might be the Mic next to the ear speaker.

My father had the same problem. He took it to the Apple Store and they replaced the glass screen. Apparently the 6 has three microphones and the one for Siri is the same one for face time which is located in the speaker for the ear piece next to the camera on the front of the phone. After the Apple Store replaced the screen which apparently has a

new mic attached to it. The phone worked almost better than new as far as Siri goes.

Try replacing the front camera/mic cable assembly.

If still not working, I'm afraid you have to do board level repair.

Update (04/18/2016)

After 4 phone replacements, and one display replacement in 6 months, I switched cases from the fully enclosed OtterBox to a Lifeproof that is sealed around the edges of the display. I am now on 7 months with no issues. Only thing I can think of is that the display was heating up too much in the OtterBox, and since the microphone for Siri and voice to text is in the display, it was frying the microphone as well. Knock on wood, I haven't had an issue since, and I was having problems every 3 or 4 weeks with every single one that the Apple Store replaced with.

Well after my 4th phone replacement in 6 months, this one finally seems to be ok (going on 6months now).

The only thing different this time is the case. I was using the OtterBox that has the plastic shield. Only thing I can think of is that heat and moisture was getting trapped inside the case and frying the display. I switched to a Lifeproof case that just seals around the edges of the display and haven't had a problem. Hope this helps!!

@Jeff Cober,

i've got an i phone 6 with a Survivor complete rubber/plastic all-around case. it's almost waterproof. family have the same setup. no sign of the overheating or moisture-trapping you mentioned for 2 years.. I did have strange issues with an earlier phone's otterbox cover that pressed on one area on the screen at times, interfering with many functions. That was a casting defect which deformed the front of the case. Your phone should make almost zero heat unless it's charging.

I have the same problem but I found the voice text thing works after 5 seconds of holding the mic button then it records fine. Where as Siri cuts off before 5 seconds has passed so won't hear me at all unless I put headphones in.

Ribbon cable for the front facing camera has the microphone, proximity sensor, ambient light, ear piece speaker and microphone for videos, siri and face time. After trying all the software fixes I changed it out and Siri works fine along with eliminating the high pitch noise my grand kids were complaining about during face time. Microphones just go bad occasionally.

Try this. Take a video of yourself speaking. One video facing you and one video facing away. Do a test count. When I did this i found that there was no sound on the video with lens facing me. That mic happens to be the same mic Siri uses. I bought a new front facing camera flex cable which includes the mic. Problem solved for me. Hope this works for someone.

Iphone6- Siri constantly starting up, interrupting, turned siri off, then voice command did the same. appeared when i used a $9 set of integrated microphone earbuds. Took those out, Siri & Voice command problem stopped. It COULD be dirt in the earphone jack. Lot of dusty work last few days. maybe those earbuds. My quickest bet would be the compressed air treatment mentioned above. For the random mid-night siri attacks, internal mic/cable/connector parts seem more likely.

Thanks!

I actually broke the ribbon cable to the microphone while changing a broken screen, I didn't know that there were multiples. So far I've only notices siri not working but haven't tried facetime yet. Guess I'll have to order up another assembly. The other mics work fine for phone calls though.

Hey guys,

I am having this exact same issue with my iphone X.

On top of that the audio level from the ear speaker is very low and it cant be turned on. Everything else works as it should in the phone. I dont know if iphone x has also a microphone in the ear speaker that is causing this problem but i will try cleaning it with compressed air and see if it works.

microphone works great for phone calls, great with video, great with almost everything, yet when I try use siri, it shows the waves as if there is audio input, but no real audio is getting in.
