My machine suddenly stopped spraying water, all it would do is repeatedly try and drain water. The (bizarre) remedy in my case was an accidental solution. Looking for the float switch, I removed the screen trap, found and removed a small screw and small shard of glass, and then tried a wash cycle for the !&&* of it, with no expectations that this could possibly make a difference. Lo and behold, it worked! What the...? Why? No idea.

Hi W Glavan,

Some dishwashers (you do not state the make and model of yours) use sensors to check on the turbidity of the water. It may be that the screw or even the glass shard were somehow 'confusing' the sensor so all the dishwasher (read control board) wanted to do was to drain the water to refill with clean. A lot of dishwashers reuse the same water during the wash/rinse cycles or parts thereof (it has gone through a filtration stage) to economize on water usage.

Perhaps this may be the explanation.

You should also wonder where the screw came from. Have you checked (as best you can) all the obvious points in the dishwasher or perhaps the handles (lids?) of your pots and pans?

Also your glassware for cracks or missing pieces.

After reading these it seems like my issue could be many things. How do I diagnose to narrow it down. It runs a cycle but not spraying water. A service tech told me it was the control board and I spent $150 on it but that did not solve the problem. I do not want to spend more money on parts that might not be needed. Any ideas. Thanks.

The pump is not working. Your dishwasher pump ejects the water. The pump is usually mounted directly to the motor, then attached to the bottom of the dishwasher. You can reach the pump from inside the dishwasher, but first you need to remove the lower rack, the spray arm, and the spray arm support.

Look for an impeller--a round plastic fan blade-type of device that spins around. This is the wash impeller, which forces the water through the spray arm. Beneath the wash impeller is the drain impeller, which is similar in size and shape to the wash impeller. The drain impeller pushes the water toward the drain port. These components make up the pump. If any of the pump components are defective, you need to replace them.

not necessarily. Before going to extremes it doesnt hurt to experiment. Put some water in bottom and run drain cancel cycle. Be patient and let it FINISH ON ITS OWN. then turn it on wash. Mine gets tempermental and if i do this it works and actually sprays water instead of humming.

Just run the drain cycle to COMPLETION before tearing the machine apart. Then run a wash cycle. May save you a lot of cursing.

My 7 year old Maytag was having the exact problem described above. Hard to believe your solution would work, but figured it was worth a try. IT WORKED!!! Thank you, just saved me about $700 bucks on the unit I was going to replace it with. Actually makes sense when you think about most PC issues need nothing more than a reboot. Thanks again for your post.

Well, it worked once. Just tried to do another load and now back to the same problem. Tried the drain thing again, a couple of times, but no luck. Oh well, guess it's time to go shopping.

OK , I tried it one last time and sure enough it's working again. But I'm still going shopping

@Fried52 what did you do?

Either you pump is not working or the seals on rotating wash spinner on the bottom is worn out...if its like mine. Could also be the water inlet to the pump is clogged...that would be the easiest fix..
