Dryer won't start (interior light working, control panel not working)?

My gas dryer is 10 years old, purchased in 2004. Last week it stopped working. The interior light turns on when I open the door, and it turns off when I close the door. In other words, the electricity is working fine.

However, when I push the buttons on the control panel to start the dryer, the lights on the control panel do not turn on, and nothing happens. Any suggestions?

My dryer does the same thing, but if I turn off the breaker and wait a little while, the dryer works for a time or two and then I have to repeat turning off the breaker for a little while. I read through the various ideas to check, but I do not see anything that verifies a part I need to check. Any ideas?

Exactly! my maytag 3700 series front load electric dryer after unplugging and waiting, then replugging, then when pushing the start button it will run. TODAY! when leaning on the machine to reach the outlet, jostling it a bit, the machine started without unplugging or having to re-push the start button. SO.... a loose connection? unbalanced somewhere? Any ideas anyone to what may be the issue?

- de

My GE does the same and I have used it for years by turning the breaker off after each use and back on when I am ready to use the dryer. No suggestions I can find to correct the issue.

I have a 10 year old whirlpool duet dryer, no power and no panel lights on but when I open door, light comes on, so it’s getting power.

Anyone know a fix ? Is it a fuse, thermostat or overheated ?

- de

Just have the same problem with my Whirlpool Duet dryer, after two technicians tested and claimed is the user interfere control board...$300 parts, just replaced it and no working !!! Model WED9400SW0. crazy! anyone knows others?

Thermal Fuse

The thermal fuse helps to prevent a dryer fire by shutting off power to the dryer if it overheats. If the dryer won't start check this fuse first. Test the thermal fuse with an ohm meter or continuity checker. This is the most common part to fail when the dryer won't start. Once the thermal fuse has blown, it has to be replaced. It can not be reset.

Start Switch

The start switch is on the dryer control panel. Depending on the model, either press a button or turn a dial to start the dryer. If the start switch fails the dryer won't start or make any noise. Test the switch with an ohm meter or continuity checker. If the dryer hums when the start switch is activated, or if the motor runs only while activating the start switch, the motor might be defective or something might be binding the drum preventing it from turning freely. If the dryer start switch does not have continuity when it is activated, it will need to be replaced.

Door Switch

The door switch is located near the dryer door and is activated when the door is closed. If the door switch fails, the dryer won't start at all. Most door switches will make an audible click when they are activated. If the door switch makes a clicking sound when activated it is probably not defective. If it doesn't make a click, it can be checked with an ohm meter or continuity checker. The door switch is relatively easy to replace and is usually not very expensive.

Drive Motor

On most dryers the drive motor turns the drum and the blower wheel to exhaust the air. If the dryer won't start the motor might be defective. Before replacing the motor, check the thermal fuse, start switch and door switch because all three are more likely the cause. If the dryer won't start and the dryer motor makes a humming noise there might be something caught in the blower wheel, or the drum might be binding. Try removing the belt from the motor and checking the blower wheel for obstructions. The dryer motor can't be tested easily. If the more common components have been checked and it seems the motor itself is defective, it will need to be replaced. It is not serviceable.

Drive Belt

On most dryers, if the drive belt breaks the motor can still be heard and it will still be blowing air out the exhaust tube, but the drum will not spin. However, in some dryers when the drive belt breaks the tension pulley arm trips a switch which shuts off power to the entire dryer. If the dryer won't start, check to see if the belt is broken. If it is, replace the belt and the dryer should be fine. If the belt is not broken, check the other components that can fail when the dryer won't start.

Thermal Cut Out Fuse Kit

Most dryers have several temperature control devices such as a thermal fuse, thermal cut out, high limit fuse or high limit thermostat. Some manufacturers sell the thermal fuse and thermal cut out in a kit. These kits normally solve no-heat problems rather than when the dryer won't start. However, in some models, this kit will solve both problems. Even though this is not the most common part to fail if the dryer won't start, both can be checked using an ohm meter or continuity checker. If they have continuity they are good. If not, they should be replaced.

Belt Switch

If the dryer won't start, there might be a belt switch that has failed. This is not a common problem and most dryers do not have this switch. If the dryer has a belt switch, the switch shuts off power to the entire dryer if the belt breaks. It is possible that this switch has failed, even if the belt is not broken. It can be checked with an ohm meter or continuity checker. If the dryer works at all, even if all it does is hum, this is not the problem.

Main Control Board

The main control board is normally not at fault when the dryer won't start. First, check all of the other components in this troubleshooting guide before replacing the main control board. The main control board can not be tested and must be replaced if it is defective. If there are obvious signs of burning or a shorted out component on the board, it should be replaced.

Timer

The timer is normally not at fault when the dryer won't start. In many situations where timers are replaced they end up being returned. First, check all of the more common components in this troubleshooting guide before replacing the timer. If the dryer won't start, the cause is much more likely to be a thermal fuse or switch. The timer can not be tested, it must be replaced if it is defective.

Thank you for your response. The continuity test revealed continuity across the fuse with wires disconnected. The thermal fuse appears to be okay. No sign evident of Main Control Board burnout. Electrician friend is here and reading the "Tech Sheet" that was inside the machine. Not sure what to do next. Any thoughts?

Did you get the problem resolved? I have an LG TROMM gas drier (DLGX2502W) that won't turn on. Interior light does turn on/off fine, so power is good. The drier has this fancy diagnostic system, but I can't use it if the machine won't turn on! I called the company, and they had be "reboot" the machine, but still no-go. I'm figuring it is a bad control board. Seems that SEARS has been replacing about 100 per year. Any thoughts out there? Thanks!

Just had my 8 year old Maytag elec. dryer diagnosed yesterday with same problem. Repairman said control board needs to be replaced. This will cost just over $300, but much cheaper than equivalent new model. Mine still works, just have to fiddle with the On button but it finally turns on.

@lig40502 Please give us your model number or start a new question so we can get you to the correct part so you can DIY.

I have a kenmore HE2 that won't start when I push the start button but all other lights do lite up,...I have checked/replaced thermal fuse and thirmistor,..and checked door switch, moisture sensor bars and moisture sensor harnes which are all good assuming I checked them right,..I get NO codes when I do a diagnostic test and all buttons beep like their supposed to but the start button still won't make the motor run(in diagnostic mode),..the trouble shooting sheet that came with machine tells me to do a "motor circuit test" on 2 wires in the main control board and it says if it measures between 1-6 ohms to replace it,..I measures with the ohm meter set at 200 and it gave me a reading of 2.1 ohms but I want to make sure that's the problem before I think about ordering the $300 board for a dryer that's over 10 years old,..thanks

I had this exact problem with a 10 year old Whirlpool dryer. The main troubleshooting information given here about thermal switches, belts, etc, is useless. The issue is with either the front panel interface or the main control board. All the talk of cold solder joints, bad tact switches, LEDs, etc. floating around the net was not applicable in my case. I went over the interface board, replaced all the switches, touched up EVERY solder connection, and it didn't help at all. I suspect the real issue is with the main control board. Both parts are around $300 each. And, if you get it wrong, you might spend $600 to fix your dryer. If you price out new dryers, that's likely NOT a good investment given something else expensive might soon fail on an older dryer. I found a nice GE steam dryer for $579 and it's matching front loader steam washer for $579 with a free 4 year warranty, free delivery, and free haul away of my old poorly designed Whirlpool appliances with overpriced parts. The cost of the new dryer was less than the cost of replacing the front panel interface and control board in my 10 year old Whirlpool. Goodbye Whirlpool.

It's most likely a burned out control board. Google your make and model to find the replacement. Watch YouTube video on how to replace it, and buy used if you can.

You can confirm if it's the board by taking it out after watching the YouTube video. If it's burned, it will be obvious with scorch marks. It's held in by just screws and clips. Take pics before disassembling so you'll know what it should look like when putting everything back together again.

I have the same issue, but if I turn the breaker off for 30 minutes and back on, the dryer will work for a cycle or two like normal. 2006 front load Kenmore Elite.

I have two dryers and I repaired one with a burnt circuit board with a small wire and soder. Now I am.wondering if this may be a similar issue. What gives me pause is the people who have replaced the board and the dryer still does not work. The board repair I made 4 years ago is still holding, so I will take a look to see if I see signs of a burnt board.

Cleaned out the exhaust vent and works great now.

I would try the thermal fuse first. Located behind the bottom kick plate. Use an ohm-meter if you know how. Just replace it if you do not. They’re cheap. UNPLUG THE DRYER FIRST. 4 quarter-inch screws, and there it is - mounted right on the vent pipe. There is always the possibility that the main control, or user interface needs to be replaced. But WPL part number 3392519 is the cheapest and easiest thing to try first - especially if you are going for a DIY repair. With that said*** On some/most models, that fuse being blown would still allow the lights on the display to turn on. It normally just won't let you start the cycle. Some models behave differently though, and kill power to the controls.

If that doesn’t do it….Next thing to do would be to disconnect the User Interface from the main control board. Blow all of the dust out of the connectors and use some dielectric grease on them. Google that if you need to:) Reconnect and try that.

Still no luck? New dryer time. Unless you can find replacement boards online for cheap - which is doubtful. Especially in the Covid supply-chain that we find ourselves in. Good Luck!

I found the issue with my dryer...works normally now. I blew out and vacuumed the exhaust vent. Used a blower to blow out and a shop vacuum to remove as much lent as possible. Had a blockage that caused the dryer temperature limit safety switch to cut power to the heater after the temperature reached a certain point. The drum continued to rotate on my Whirlpool Model # GEW9250PWI. The laundry would mostly dry, but now dries like new. I have a 32' vent. Will swap it out to a rigged vent because of the long distance and one 90 degree bend. 40' is the max with rigid. Subtract 8' for each 90 degree bend. Also, subtract 8' for flex vent material. Current flex material is over the distance for best venting. Works fine now, but I will monitor to see if the issue returns. May need to change out the temperature limit safety switch if it has become weak.

I'm sure it's the motherboard. Look on YouTube how to get to the motherboard. Then Google the part number on the board, and purchase a replacement.

Then take pictures of how the motherboard is attached so that you can make sure to attach the replacement the correct way.

That's what I did, still going strong for years now, again.

Did it to 2 dryers and one washer.

@milkinman You'll have better luck getting an answer to your question if it's categorized correctly under Maytag rather than tagging onto a Kenmore thread.
