The port for the charger in my MacBook is all burnt out, we've tried cleaning it (toothbrush and alcohol) and getting new chargers (60W). It's been dead for about a year now, and I've decided I finally want to fix it. Is there an inexpensive way to replace it without having to solder or do anything complex?

Luckily for you, the MagSafe connector is independent from the motherboard on all three versions of the MacBook. If you have the first generation Non-Unibody MacBook, you can use this guide for Core Duo Models or this guide for Core 2 Duo models. If you have an aluminum unibody MacBook, you can use this guide, and if you have the plastic unibody MacBook (the last model), you can use this guide. You'll need to make sure that you buy the correct replacement part for whichever laptop you have, they're pretty cheap. If you tell me your MacBook's model number, I can help you find the correct part and guide to use for it. Good luck!

That happened to my MacBook, I went to Apple Store and it was only $13.00 canadian dollars to fix... and they give you a discount on the charger if you bring your old one, and it cost me only $60.00 when its usually 100, also they discounted the Hardware Repair Labor which is an other 40

Gee, have you figured out why they are so nice to you? Think they would give an old man the same discounts? Yes there is discrimination in this world, sometimes it's the reverse of what you think it is.
Oh that's lucky for you. I have the same problem and yes the bit is 13.00 but they've quoted me 109.00 Cdn for labour! :(

I'm no computer expert, and may be wrong here, but having had the 'burning-out' problem myself I suspect I at least know the reason, and therefore the remedy, provided you catch the problem early enough.
The 'male' part of the MagSafe port, or the end which plugs into the computer has five metal contacts. These each have a tiny spring under them to ensure a contact is made. If, for any reason, these become stuck, the contact may not reach its corresponding female part in the computer, causing it to fail to connect, or to arc, and it will be this arc-ing which causes the burning. If the contacts in your computer are not beyond redemption, they can be scraped clean (I used a jewellers screwdriver) and a new charging lead purchased. In my case I managed to free-up the two stuck male pins, but suspect this will be a temporary fix. I'll keep checking my new lead when I get it!

@wordssmith100 - Frank, often the cords are damaged on the MagSafe charger which shorts out the sensor line. If the cord is damaged in any way bumps, frayed or outer jacket cut best to replace the charger and if the pins are melted or damaged that too! If you don't you could also damage the logic board in your MacBook or MacBook Pro

I think I have the same problem, I took my mac to an apple store and they told me that it could be the charging port or the motherboard and that they did not have parts to repair because it is an older model.
My machine was very good and one day I ran out of battery and then it did not start any more, do you think that this will be the problem? Which pin should I buy, my machine is model MacBook Air "Core i5" 1.6 11" (Mid-2011)

I have a MacBook Air model A1370 and one day the charger stopped working. The charger would charge but was very touchy, like if you moved it it wouldn’t work. Then I also noticed that it would heat up and get hot on the charging head of the charger. Then it stopped working. I checked the charging head apparatus on the charger and it was burned across the pins, totally shot but my charging port looks good. I am wondering if I have to just buy another charger or if I have to replace the whole charging port? Thanks in advance for your reply this column is great.

By using silver polish and a Q tip. One can clean and polish the port contact nodes which result in the removal of oxidized metal particles.

What if somebody took a lighter and heated the port on the on the charging port of the lap top my charger looks perfect however it looks as if whatever was used to heat the port has slightly melted and sunk in the port can this be fixed

Is there a guide for a MacBook A1502 EMC 2875 from 2014? Retina display. I think the fellow that mentioned the springs in the mag safe adapter failing is correct at least in terms of the cause of my issue. I've been able to get it to power up but the arcing caused by the poor connection has scarred some of the ports.

You'll need either one of these:

Make sure you get the correct part for your system.

Hi! I have a Macbook Pro (retina, 13-inch, late 2013) with a MagSafe 2 that is completely burnt and ruining all of my chargers. I was wondering what you recommended I should do— go to an Apple store? or try to buy the parts and fix it myself? I don’t have much experience with fixing technology, but could definitely give it a shot! Just don’t want to mess anything up.

Hello! I’ve got a 2015 A 1502 Macbook pro and 2 of the contact points in the charging port are burnt. I got a new charger and it seems to be working but I’d like to either clean the charging port or repair it. No Apple stores near me only best buy so does anyone have know what options do I have?

This happened on my macbook 15” 2011, I bought a second hand (but working) charging port from ebay and followed an online guide to fitting it, it is doable but involves taking out the main board, you need to be really organised and take your time
