Noisy fan, book died, power light from charger cable on, nothing

Hi, I was cleaning the keys on my white macbook when it died. I mean dead. I called the apple store and they said its probably the power supply (I mentioned the *very* noisy fan it had) I was going to drop it in for a repair and also considered fixing it myself. Anyway not being *very* tech savvy and it being 5 years old I opted for a new machine and have a nice new macbook pro.

My question is: Is there anyway I can:

A) Retrieve the contents of this machine,as I had music and photos on it

B) Maybe repair it cost effectively as a back up machine?

Is the magsafe tip still green when you connect it to the A1342 ? If so I don't think the DC in board is faulty. Maybe too much liquid or humidity ruined your power button when you cleaned your keyboard. To check this you have to remove the macbook bottom panel and jump start the logic board with the keyboard cable disconnected from the logic board. If the logic board power on then the power button is faulty and that means a top case replacement.

If you don't get the green diode lighten on your magsafe tip when you connect it to the macbook (must be sure that magsafe charger is functional) then the DC in board could be faulty or something else on the logic board preventing the SMC to communicate with the magsafe charger.

No problem to take off your hard disk from the macbook and have access to your data. Just remove the bracket holding your hard disk in place (2 screws philips 00), disconnect the HD from it's cable and install the HD in an external 2.5" SATA enclosure ($20 in any electronic shop).

Sounds like you need to try a new battery. Esp if it is 5 years old. those need to be replaced every two years to a year in my option.

This should help the fan noise and also a can of air should help with that problem too.
